Trivia / Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution

• The Danza: As was the case in the movie this is a remake of, Raymond, the pirate trainer Ash faces at the beginning, is voiced by Raymond Johnson in the Japanese version.
• Directed by Cast Member:
  • In the English dub, Lisa Ortiz is the ADR director and the voice of Neesha.
  • In the Latin American Spanish dub, Miguel Ángel Leal is the ADR director as well as Ash's voice actor.
• International Coproduction: The film was produced by OLM in Tokyo, Japan, and Sprite Animation Studios in Los Angeles, California.
• Lying Creator: The marketing for the movie stated for a while that the Armored Mewtwo design would only appear in this movie and nowhere else; cue Pokémon GO revealing a trailer in which Armored Mewtwo will be available as a limited time raid, and again for the international release.
• Meaningful Release Date: The English dub of the movie was released on Netflix on February 27th, the release date of the original Red & Green and Pokemon Day to celebrate the franchise's birthday.
• The Other Darrin:
  • A Zig-Zagged example in the English dub. Sarah Natochenny, Bill Rogers, Michele Knotz, and Carter Cathcart are still Ash, Brock, Misty, and Team Rocket instead of their predecessors who voiced them in the original’s dub, with Maddie Blaustein (Meowth) having died over a decade prior anyway, while others such as Lisa Ortiz and Ted Lewis reprise their roles from said dub.
  • While Dan Green does reprise his role as Mewtwo from the second movie, he does replace Jay Geode, who voiced Mewtwo in the original version of this movie. Likewise, Dr. Fuji is voiced by Billy Bob Thompson.
  • Raymond has a different voice actor in the dub due to Maddie Blaustein having passed away.
  • While Joy and Giovanni in the Japanese version have their more recent or current voice actors voicing them, Dr. Fuji is voiced by Minoru Inaba, rather than Yosuke Akimoto who voiced him in the original movie.
  • The same goes in the Latin American Spanish dub, as Ash, Mewtwo and Dr. Fuji's voice actors were replaced, since Ash's previous voice actor, Gabriel Ramos, stopped voicing him after he moved to Argentina, while the latter two character's VAs, Enrique Mederos and Esteban Siller, died in 2004 and 2013. In this case, they were replaced with Miguel Ángel Leal, Luis Leonardo Suárez and German Fabregat respectively.
• Posthumous Credit:
  • As the movie is a remake of the first movie, Takeshi Shudō is credited as a writer despite having died of a subarachnoid hemorrhage in 2010.
  • The same applies to the narrator after Unshō Ishizuka died of esophageal cancer nearly a year previous (though he managed to record his lines five months before his death, avoiding the need to recycle the original narration).
• Role Reprise:
  • Masachika Ichimura, who played Mewtwo in the Japanese version of the first movie, returns to voice the character.
  • Surprisingly, Dan Green was brought back to voice Mewtwo in the English dub. The last time he played the role was in Mewtwo Returns.
  • Miranda, Fergus and Corey were voiced in the English dub of the original by Lisa Ortiz, Carter Cathcart and Ted Lewis, who are all still part of the English dub today, with Ortiz and Lewis returning during the Diamond & Pearl series.
  • In the Italian dub, Mario Zucca also reprises the role of Mewtwo. Also Guilherme Briggs in Brazilian Portuguese and Jean-Marc Delhausse in French.
  • The Danish dub managed to bring almost all of the voice actors from Pokémon: The First Movie back. This is especially noteworthy because Brock and Misty's voice actors (Peter Holst-Beck and Lulu Jacobsen) had retired from dubbing several years ago. Mewtwo is actually the only major character whose voice actor is replaced (from Søren Spanning to Kasper Leisner, as Spanning died two weeks before the film's release).
  • The Norwegian dub managed to bring back the old voice-actors of Brock and Giovanni, which is weird since both of them got replaced years ago in the show.
  • The Finnish dub managed to bring back the original voice actors for Mewtwo and Brock, with Mewtwo's voice actor Jussi Lampi returning to the role for the first time since the original film which was 20 years ago. He was replaced by Pasi Ruohonen (the Narrator) in Mewtwo Returns. Brock's original voice actor Juha Paananen was replaced by Jari Salo during season 7 and onwards. Also Pasi Ruohonen returns as the Narrator and Corey respectively. Ruohonen voiced the Narrator and many side characters from season 1-17.
  • The Croatian dub most notably brings back the voice actors of Ash Ketchum (Saša Buneta), Mewtwo (Sven Medvešek), Jessie (Mila Elegović) and James (Hrvoje Klobučar) from the original. Meowth and Misty get a different form of role reprisal; while their voice actors in the new movie do not match the ones in the original, these new ones did voice their respective characters in the TV series at some given point before this movie was released.
