Trivia / Mandela Catalogue

Go To

  • Actor Leaves, Character Dies: After being outed for extremely manipulative behavior behind the scenes, Gabriel Linan's character, Jonah Marshall, was killed off before expected. His ambiguous fate at the end of "Volume 2" was retconned into his death, and Sarah forcing Adam to make a memorial for him is the focus of their subplot in "Volume 4".
  • Ascended Fanon:
    • Alternate Cesar is often depicted with half his face obscured by a shadow in fan art. Alex eventually used this design in a teaser video featuring Alternate Cesar (albeit with one of his eyes hidden by the shadow rather than visible like in most fan art).
    • After its name was revealed in a teaser image, some fans have drawn the Preacher in a nun outfit. "Interlude" later revealed the Preacher to be an Alternate of a nun.
  • Approval of God: Alex has given quite a bit of praise to various fan works, such as Sr. Pelo's The Mandela Magazine, and a Friday Night Funkin' Game Mod known as Funkdela Catalog; the former he left a comment saying that it was the "best thing" he's ever seen, and the latter of which he was a co-commentator of a stream play through of it with a YouTuber by the name of Kwite.
  • Colbert Bump:
    • The series saw an increase in popularity when YouTuber Wendigoon made a video covering it.
    • It then received a second shoutout when Markiplier made a video about a fangame called Maple County, and then watched the first volume of The Mandela Catalogue. It's also here that Alex Kister confirmed that Mark Heathcliff was named after Markiplier.
    • It received yet another shoutout when Night Mind made a video covering the series up to Volume 2 as well.
  • Content Leak: In response to the allegations of sexual misconduct against Alex, several former staff members and Patreon supporters alike leaked content such as early access clips, story content, and behind-the-scenes footage out of protest.
  • Creator's Favorite: Alex's favorite type of alternates are the ones in their "pure" forms with black bodies, white eyes, and distinct inhuman features. He has also stated in a Q&A video that Adam is his favorite character.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: Alex has revealed in a Q&A video that Volume 3 is his favorite volume.
  • Descended Creator: Both Mark Heathcliff and Dave Lee are portrayed by Alex Kister himself.
  • God Never Said That:
    • Many fans believe that the angelic figure officially is Jesus Christ's alternate, while it's been confirmed that it's actually the Archangel Gabriel's alternate. It's often believed to come from Wendigoon's video where he distinctly believed the angelic figure was Jesus.
    • Though Alex has clarified that they're the same character with a different appearance, some fans still believe the hooded Intruder from Vol. 1 and the TV Intruder from Intruder Alert and onwards are two different characters.
  • Hey, It's That Sound!: "Overthrone" uses synthetic speech software that gamers will recognize as appearing in (but not originating from) FAITH: The Unholy Trinity, Serial Experiments Lain and No More Heroes.
  • Missing Trailer Scene: The "Vol. 333" teaser has plot elements that never actually appear in the episode proper:
    • A magazine cover headlining the MCPD's coverup of Mandela's Alternate invasion is shown. The only element of this that appears in the actual episode is Lt. Davis's picture, which is reused as his portrait in the police dispatch call with Lt. Weaver.
    • A screenshot of a fake edutainment game named "My Interactive Bible" is briefly seen.
    • Jonah is heard talking to Adam, with the former believing the latter to be an Alternate. Neither of them appear in "Vol. 333", with the majority of the screentime instead revolving around Lt. Thatcher Davis.
  • Official Fan-Submitted Content: "Reminisce (500k Sub Special)" is a Milestone Celebration Clip Show mostly comprised of fan art and fan videos from various Twitter and YouTube users.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Thorne Baker, the creator of the fangame Maple County, later became the voice actor of Thatcher Davis and the CGI artist for the Mandela Catalogue.
    • bl11nsided, also known as Spidey, was a well-known fan artist for the Mandela Catalogue prior to starring as Evelin in the 333 extension.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Mark and the younger Sarah Heathcliff are played by Alex and his sister Christina Kister respectively.
    • Michelle Strohwig, Alex's mother, voiced the alternate that followed Mark home in Vol. 1 and the Intruder's spirit box voice in Vol. 2.
  • Rule 34 – Creator Reactions: Alex has repeatedly stated that he's uncomfortable with people sexualizing his characters, that the alternates do not want to have sex with anybody, and wants them to stop. Given that the human cast are portrayed by Alex himself and people he personally knows, it's not hard to understand this reaction.
  • Underage Casting: 20-year-old Thorne Baker, AKA Teenage Disaster, plays Thatcher Davis, a character that's been on the police force for at least as long as his actor's been alive.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the playlist section, you can see the Original Copies of the Mandela Catalogue, including multiple deleted scenes, such as Sarah calling Mark, which is how Cesar's Alternate copied her voice.
    • Several details have been revealed on Alex's twitter account.
      • Apparently, a face from The Scrimblo Catalogue was originally meant to appear in "Exhibiton", but Alex thought it was becoming "less creepy the more he looked at him", so he removed him. However, he did reuse the face near the end of Mandela Catalogue Vol 2 when Adam enters the basement.
      • A very distorted picture of the Intruder was cut.
      • Mark was originally planned to be the main focus of Vol. 2. In the finished product, Mark only makes a brief cameo appearance on the Intruder's TV.
  • Word of God:
    • Alex revealed on Twitter that he and the official Discord server had "mutually agreed" that the names of The Intruder and the void-face Alternate that appeared at the end of The THINK Principle are 6 and N respectively.
    • When a fan asked Alex about Mandela County's location, he replied that the series takes place in southern Wisconsin.
