- Creator-Driven Successor: Made by the same creators as 1998's The Count of Monte Cristo, with mostly the same ambitions.
- Fake Nationality:
- The American John Malkovich as the French Javert.
- Italians Asia Argento and Enrico Lo Verso as the French Eponine Thénardier and Marius Pontmercy, respectively.
- International Coproduction: Along with France, companies from Italy, Germany, the USA, Spain, Japan and Canada invested in this miniseries.
- Playing Against Type: Along with 2002's Napoléon, this is one of a handful of times that Christian Clavier (Thénardier) has not played a comedy part.
- Production Posse: This miniseries was made by the same team behind 1998's The Count of Monte Cristo (actor Gérard Depardieu, director Josée Dayan and screenwriter Didier Decoin). They also made a Honoré de Balzac biopic miniseries in 1999 and The Accursed Kings in 2005.
