• Bury Your Art: Trumbo withdrew the book from print after Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941. The American Communist Party, to which Trumbo belonged, openly opposed US intervention against Nazi Germany prior to the invasion due to their alliance with the Soviet Union via the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and the novel was used as a rallying cry for this purpose. Thus, Trumbo and the rest of the party felt that the Nazi invasion invalidated the book's goals and instead shifted focus towards supporting US intervention against Germany, so long as it included an alliance with the Soviets. The book only returned to print after the end of World War II.
• Market-Based Title: The Spanish-language release of the film adaptation renames it Johnny Fue A La Guerra (Johnny Went to War).
• Keep Circulating the Tapes: For a very long while, the movie was not available on video (outside a brief VHS and Laserdisc release in 1980), as Metallica had forgotten they were the sole owners of it. It finally got a release by Shout! Factory in 2008. It's for this reason the region one release of the DVD comes with a copy of the music video.
• Self-Adaptation: Dalton Trumbo wrote the book and was the writer and director of the movie.
