Trivia / John Frusciante

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: He isn't very fond of Smile From the Streets You Hold, mainly because he only recorded and released it so he could get more money for his drug habit.
  • Creator Breakdown: What caused his first departure from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. During shows, he'd do everything he could to sabotage the whole performance.
  • Cut Song: Niandra Lades (as presented on its promo cassette) would have featured "Bought Her Soul" ("Well I've Been) and "Soul Removal" ("Height Down"), as well as "Ants". The first two were removed due to featuring the late River Phoenix, whose family requested their removal - they were later released on "Smile From The Streets You Hold" under the new titles. "Ants" was removed for space reasons, as was an alternate version of "Untitled #3" from "Usually Just A T-Shirt", although they were kept on the commercial cassette release. The promo cassette also featured a longer version of "Untitled #6".
    • In fact, "Niandra" was likely to have featured more songs than the promo cassette were it not for the decision to combine it with "Usually Just A T-Shirt" - "Mascara" features an excerpt of the later released "Outside Space", and his notes for the release indicated that "Smile From The Streets You Hold" (although only the first half was recorded at the time) was a possible inclusion.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: His second album, Smile From The Streets You Hold, has been out of print since 1998. It probably doesn't help much that John stated he doesn't like the album very much, since he released it only to get drug money. The collaboration done with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez also counts.
    • There are also some tracks that were never released formally, but were played on many live concerts. They can be found on a couple of bootlegs.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover
  • Promoted Fanboy: John was a RHCP fan when he became part of the band.
  • Reclusive Artist: For a long time, he spent all his time locked up in his apartment doing drugs. Since getting clean, he's become a lot more open and active.
  • Trailer Delay: His live shows supporting "To Record Only Water For Ten Days" in early 2001 featured several songs ("Ricky", "Cut Out", "In Relief") that were not released until 2004's Shadows Collide With People.
  • What Could Have Been: Oh, so many times.
    • Before joining the Peppers, he wanted to audition to Frank Zappa's band, but gave up when he discovered Zappa didn't wanted any of his musicians using drugs.
    • After leaving the Peppers for the first time, he created a band with Flea and Stephen Perkins called "The Three Amoebas". The band broke up, and although at least 10 hours worth of recorded material exist, nothing has been released.
    • The two tracks of Smile From The Streets You Hold featuring River Phoenix were meant to be released on his first album, but River's death caused a delay on the release of said tracks.
      • Another track, Outside Space, was to be featured on this album as well, but it couldn't make into the final cut because there wasn't enough space left. Part of the intro appeared as the coda of Mascara, and the full track was released on the Estrus EP.
