  • Box Office Bomb: Budget, $75 million. Gross, $51,142,659.
  • Creator Killer: Following the film's failure, director Ron Shelton didn't write and direct another movie again until 2017's Just Getting Started.
  • Deleted Scene: Ron Shelton mentions two scenes that were cut from the movie: an early scene where Ruby breaks up with former boyfriend Bennie Macko, because Shelton thought this was giving too much information too soon and would've ruined the shocked look on Gavilan's face when he learns that Macko used to date Ruby; and a more explicit love scene between Gavilan and Ruby (a side profile of her breast appears to have been edited out) to achieve a PG-13 rating.
  • Hostility on the Set: Reportedly, Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett did not get along during production, and neither were very warm with each other when they went out to go promote the movie. Hartnett later revealed in an interview that he and Ford got along better by the end of filming, but said that there were times they would end up just sitting in the car when they were supposed to be doing a scene and neither of them would say anything for like an hour.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Ron Shelton says that he started work on this film after learning how many cops pursue second, often lucrative, careersnote  but that the line between multiple occupations can get blurry at times.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Gavilan is a good shot and almost a stunt driver, while Calden is a lousy shot and driver. In reality Harrison Ford doesn't like guns and is a very poor shot at best while Josh Hartnett is a very good marksman. Hartnett on the other hand does not like to drive while Ford is, according to Ron Shelton, "...a maniac behind the steering wheel".
  • Mid-Development Genre Shift: The film was originally going to be a drama before Marion "Suge" Knight complained to the producers. The film was subsequently turned into a comedy.
  • Real-Life Relative: Lolita Davidovich, Ron Shelton's real-life wife, has a small role as a madam who has a history with Gavilan.
  • Recycled Set: The hip-hop club was also used as the base of operations in Ocean's Eleven.
  • What Could Have Been: The roles of Gavilan and Kalden were first offered to John Travolta and Joseph Gordon-Levitt respectively.
