Trivia / Gorath

  • Creator Backlash: Though he did help design the Kaiju, Ishiro Honda was against the inclusion of a giant monster, even stating that Gorath would’ve been his favorite film he directed had it not been for Maguma.
  • Executive Meddling: Maguma was a request by the higher ups at Toho who felt there should’ve been a Kaiju in the film.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: It’s one of the many Toho science fiction films that wasn’t released on DVD or Blu-ray in its original form in the US. Even the American cut has only been released on VHS. The only way fans can see this movie is either through bootlegs or if they have Comet TV.
  • What Could Have Been: Maguma was originally supposed to be a reptile, but Tomoyuki Tanaka objected to another Godzilla-like monster. However, apparently whoever made the films script forgot to change Maguma's species from reptile to walrus, and he's identified as that in film. So yeah, Maguma is actually a giant reptile which evolved in such a way it just so happened to look like a walrus instead.... Artistic License – Biology?
