Trivia / 5 Seconds of Summer

• Black Sheep Hit: One of their biggest hits so far is "Amnesia", a "Hey There Delilah"-esque acoustic ballad that sounds nothing like the pop-punk they are known for. Also ironic considering that the Plain White T's were originally a pop-punk group before "Delilah"'s success. "Amnesia" is also an anomaly in that it's the only song on the album 5SOS doesn't have writing credits for. It was actually written by the Madden Brothers from Good Charlotte and sounds nothing like the pop punk they were known for either.
• Colbert Bump: Them opening for One Direction on two of their tours ultimately brought them much greater success than any other artists associated with the band save for Ed Sheeran.
• Creator Backlash: "Don't Stop" is this for the group, though this might be less because of the song itself and because of the reactions to it being overly saturated on radio at the time.
• Fandom Nod: C A L M is likely based off of a common nickname used by the band by fans.
• Follow the Leader: Following the success of these guys' first album, several other Pop Punk groups took a bit of influence from them. Notably, All Time Low's 6th album, Future Hearts was half-produced and written by John Feldmann and sounds like they were trying to appeal to their fanbase, some of whom were already fans of them. McBusted's, first album has a similar style and production to 5 Seconds of Summer's first album as well, which fits as they are a fusion of McFly and Busted. They even toured with them on the European leg of their 2014 tour to catch some of the hype.
• Promoted Fanboy:
  • It says a lot about 5SOS' rise to fame when they started off doing Top 40 and pop punk covers on Luke's YouTube channel to becoming one of the biggest pop acts and gaining acknowledgement from their pop punk/pop rock/just rock predecessors in only three years.
  • They went from covering One Direction to touring with them to being practically their only competition worldwide. Now that One Direction has broken up, this leaves 5SOS to some as their successor.
