- Ability over Appearance: John Malkovich bears absolutely no resemblance to the much heavier Judge Edward Cowart who presided over Ted Bundy's murder trial in Florida. On the other hand, Malkovich's performance certainly conveys the judge's personality and reputed quirky sense of humor.
- Approval of God: In a way... after the trailer was criticized by some for perceived glorification of Bundy, Kathy Kleiner Rubin, a survivor of Bundy said she didn't have a problem with how the movie portrayed him.
- In Memoriam: The movie ends with the names of Bundy's victims.
- Playing Against Type:
- While Zac Efron and Jim Parsons had done dramatic work before, this is easily the most serious mainstream movie either have been in.
- Director Joe Berlinger is most well known as a documentarian (albeit of True Crime subjects), and this is his first dramatic feature since Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
