Trivia / Dragula

  • Channel Hop: Every time Dragula comes back for a new season, it seems to be on a new channel. The first season aired as a standalone project on the Hey Qween YouTube channel. Season 2 also aired on YouTube, although this time the official WOW Presents channel, while airing on OutTV in Canada. Season 3 jumped to Amazon Prime (which also lead to the first two seasons getting pulled from YouTube), and then Season 4 moved again to horror movie streaming service Shudder, where it has remained ever since.
  • Executive Meddling: Several looks or explanations were tamed down due to the 2nd and 3rd seasons' Canadian production company censorship:
    • Biqtch Puddin's Gothic Bride look was intended to be a macabre reference to the murdered child pageant queen JonBenét Ramsey, complete with the strangulation marks on Biqtch's neck. The explanation was cut from the show due to the then OutTV censors objecting.
    • James Majesty intended to give herself a golden shower as part of her Finale Filth look but wasn't allowed to perform the act on set. This led to the giant sausage and mustard moment instead.
    • Victoria Elizabeth Black's Finale Filth look also suffered as a result of the censorship concerns, as Victoria apparently fisted the fake corpse and then disemboweled it through its ass. While she did manage to perform this on stage, that part of the act cut from the episode.
    • In season 3, it was a plot point that Hollow Eve was saving their used tampons in the cast's communal freezer. By the time of the garbage and permanent marker makeup challenge of episode 5, Hollow wore an outfit made out of unused tampons and maxi pads, having been told by production that they couldn't use their actual blood, fake blood, or even red makeup with respect to all the feminine sanitary products, making their attempt to subvert No Periods, Period fall flat, which was a factor in their extermination that very episode.
  • Extremely Lengthy Creation:
    • There was a two-year gap in between the show's second (2017) and third (2019) seasons, with little word from the Boulets during that period. Ultimately a positive example, as the third season came with a significant budget increase.
    • A similar break occurred between seasons 3 and 4, and while extenuating circumstances were to blame, the Resurrection special was filmed and released with a skeleton crew and social distancing for a 2020 release. The show returned for a proper season 4 in 2021, with the grand prize raised to US$100,000.note
  • Romance on the Set:
    • Abhora and Erika admitted to having some romantic involvement during season two, and Victoria said she and Dahli started seeing each other after the latter's elimination.
    • Season 4 saw a budding romance between Astrud and HoSo, including a lingering "meet cute" shot in episode 1. Though this was Cut Short after the former was eliminated in episode 2.
    • Romantic tension was so present on the Titans set as to become a major plot point. Not only are both Erika/Abhora and HoSo/Astrud back with unresolved tensions, but Abhora has clear feelings for and a history with HoSo, whereas HoSo’s feelings are far more ambiguous.
    • Orkgotik developed a crush on Niohuru X right off the gate in Season 5. The two subsequently revealed they are dating. Some contestants understandably expressed concern about a repeat of Titans' Romantic Plot Tumour.
  • Serendipity Writes the Plot: According to Jarvis Hammer's backstory, he died in the 1970s after being crushed to death by some falling stagelights. This is the exact way Jarvis is killed off after failing the extermination. According to their podcast, the Boulets were completely unaware of this aspect of Jarvis' backstory and picked death by stagelights because they felt it was an appropriate way to cap off the extermination challenge. Needless to say, they are positively giddy at how things worked out.
  • What Could Have Been: On their podcast, the Boulets confirmed that there was a twelfth contestant cast on Season 5 who dropped out prior to filming and wasn't replaced. This is most likely why Jay Kay was brought back in the second episode.
    • It was also confirmed that Orkgotik would have been a contestant on Season 4, but they couldn't secure a visa due to residual issues from the pandemic.
  • Word of God: Saint stated on social media that each of her Finale Floor Show looks of Season 4 had a connection to one of her previous looks: Glamour was the wife of her Ghost Ship Glamour ghoul, the Horror tooth fairy was the reason her Killer Clown couldn’t talk, and the Filth housewife was her Vampire from Resurrection before being turned.
