Trivia / Dark Winds

Go To

  • California Doubling: The series is set in the Navajo Nation, which covers parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Although it's shot in New Mexico (with some establishing shots done in Arizona), production primarily takes place around Santa Fe, which is about 200 miles away from the nearest Navajo land and has very different terrain.
  • Fake American: Jessica Matten is a Canadian of Red River Métis and Saulteaux-Cree heritage playing an American Navajo.
  • Fake Nationality: Navajo Nation that is. While all the actors playing Dineh characters are Native American, Deanna Allison (Emma Leaphorn) and Jeremiah Bitsui (Hoski) are the only notable cast members who are actually Dineh and not members of a different First Nations peoplenote .
  • Produced by Cast Member: Zahn McClarnon is a producer on the series and has a hand in establishing its visual aesthetic and final casting.
  • Remake Cameo: Chris Eyre, who directed the previous Leaphorn and Chee adaptations for PBS, returns to direct the pilot episode.
  • Wag the Director: Season 2's climax was supposed to be Leaphorn shooting Vines in the middle of the desert. However, Zahn McClarnon objected, saying that it was against Leaphorn's character to do so. After much back and forth, executive producer Chris Eyre agreed to go with McLarnon's idea that Leaphorn leave Vines in unfamiliar land with little clothing and no tools and says that it was for the better.
