- This lightweight family comedy became something of a Running Gag on Siskel & Ebert. While it was trashed by most critics, Roger Ebert gave it an unexpected three stars, calling it likable despite its Strictly Formula nature, which translated to a thumbs-up on the TV show. Gene Siskel, who hated the movie, was flabbergasted, and thereafter would mention Cop and a Half whenever he wanted cast doubt on Ebert's judgment as a critic, while Ebert would defend the review.
- In the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of Mitchell, a scene where the film's Cowboy Cop protagonist gets pestered by a young boy is called "the inspiration for Cop and a Half" (which had been released a few months before the episode).
