Trivia / Common

  • Acclaimed Flop: Resurrection and, to a slightly lesser extent, One Day It'll All Make Sense. Both were acclaimed by critics but sold very modestly. Common finally found commercial success that matched his critical success with Like Water For Chocolate.
  • Creator Backlash: Common has renounced his older songs with anti-gay lyrics.
  • Dueling Works: Subverted. Common's fellow Chicagoan emcee Twista also had an album called Resurrection released near-simultaneously at the same time as Common's Resurrection. However, because Common's was released first, Twista's label chose not to release his album nationally to avoid a marketing snafu. As a result, Twista's album was only sold locally in Chicago.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: A Californian surf reggae band also named Common Sense sued the rapper for trademark infringement, forcing him to shorten his name to just "Common". His third album One Day It'll All Make Sense, was titled as such to get around the lawsuit, and still featured his "Common Sense" logo on the cover.
  • What Could Have Been: He was the first choice to play Roadblock in the 2009-2013 Live-Action Adaptation of G.I. Joe. Scheduling conflicts with him were what caused the character to be replaced by Heavy Duty in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, before ultimately being played by Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
