Trivia / Close Enough

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Bridgette is at least part-Japanese like her voice actress Kimiko Glenn.
  • Channel Hop: From cable channel TBS to streaming service HBO Max before its debut, though the sneak peek of the show at Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2020 retained the "TBS Presents" credit in the title sequence.
  • Creator-Driven Successor: To J.G. Quintel's previous show, Regular Show. Quintel himself notes that its the same comedic style, but with the plots now geared to reflect the lives of people in their 30s, as opposed to Regular Show's plots reflecting people in their 20s.
  • Denial of Digital Distribution: Was yanked from HBO Max following the end of the third season.
  • Development Gag: The initial plan for the show to premiere on TBS before moving to HBO Max is alluded to in "Time Hooch" where Josh and the Alexes hide behind the grave of "Lenny R. Television". note
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: "Canine Guy" has the character Dog Boy, voiced by William Salyers, who played Rigby in Regular Show.
  • Ink-Suit Actor:
    • Both Josh and Alex heavily resemble their voice actors J.G. Quintel and Jason Mantzoukas respectively.
    • Played with in "Halloween Enough" where Kimiko Glenn, Gabrielle Walsh, and Jessica DiCicco appear as themselves and voice their characters
  • Missing Trailer Scene:
    • The original TBS trailer that aired at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2017 was actually all original footage made to sell the series, edited to look as if they were snippets from existing episodes. Some animation did get recycled for the show, however:
    • The scene where Josh and Emily get caught having sex in a car by their friends and daughter appears as a flashback in "So Long Boys" (during the beginning where Emily and Josh have a pregnancy scare).
    • The scene of Bridgette doing model poses for her mugshot appears in "Prank War".
    • Josh getting hit in the groin as he tries to ollie at the skateboard park and Josh doing a split to go under a truck (which causes his crotch and butt to get set on fire) were seen in "Skate Dad" (there is a slight change between the two scenes: the version shown in the trailer has Josh, Emily, and Candice wearing helmets while the actual episode doesn't).
    • Emily's face shrinking after she takes a hit off a marijuana joint was in "100% No-Stress Day", with the plain purple background swapped out in favor of Bridgette's car. Also: Bridgette and Emily playing the guitar while high was also in the promo trailer with a less detailed background, but was replaced with a more detailed background (a coffee shop) in the actual episode.
  • No Export for You: Netflix UK only got the first two seasons before the series was removed.
  • Production Posse: Head writers for Regular Show (Sean Szeles, Calvin Wong, and Matt Price) return. Other writing and storyboarding staff such as Owen Dennis, Ryan Pequin, Madeline Queripel, and Andres Salaff are also present, as are composers Mark Mothersbaugh, John Enroth, and Albert Fox.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: It's revealed Randy is gay from the Season 3 episode "Randy Free Solos," just like his actor.
  • Screwed by the Network: Despite intending to have a fourth season, "Close Enough" ended up getting cancelled after the third season due to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The show would be removed from HBO Max a month after said cancellation, with the only chance of watching the show legally being through purchase via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu, and YouTube.
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: The show was set to air in 2018 as part of a TBS adult animation block that included American Dad! and Final Space. The series was meant to be paired with the Louis C.K. animated comedy The Cops, but when TBS scrapped the show following C.K.'s sexual misconduct scandal, Close Enough found itself trapped in limbo due to losing its lead-in. In October 2019, it was announced that it would be joining the lineup of the upcoming streaming service HBO Max, but even then, it didn't premiere until over a month after the service's launch.
  • Voices in One Room: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, JG Quintel mentioned how the cast recorded together for every episode.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • As mentioned above, this show was intended as part of an adult animation block on TBS that ended up getting scrapped.
    • All the episodes in season one were originally 22-minutes long, but towards the end of production, executives suggested that they be trimmed down into 11-minutes, much like Regular Show. This mostly came in the form of removing the B-plots, with those stories (for example, Alex and Bridgette watching Candice in "Quilty Pleasures" was supposed to have more scenes of Bridgette and Alex looking for her and Alex getting stuck in the broken vent) being reduced to a handful of scenes in the final episodes.
    • Early concept art reveals several design differences:
      • There was another housemate named Payton who was eventually scrapped.
      • There is an African American man present in one of the images who may or may not have been an early version of Alex
      • Alex and Bridgette had different designs - Alex was a caucasian guy with a similar body type to his current design, with had shorter light brown hair and a goatee, and did not have glasses and wore a long sleeve grey shirt with olive jeans. Bridgette also appeared to be Caucasian and had longer dark (in one image blonde) hair with a small portion work in a ponytail, and she wore a long pink dress with long sleeves and a light pink scarf.
      • Josh and Emily's designs remained pretty much the same, with the exception that Josh did not wear his hoodie and Emily wore a purple tank top with black leggings and had all of her hair tied into her ponytail except for her bangs, as opposed to now where some of her hair in the back is worn loose.
      • In some images Candice has her bangs pinned back with hair clips.
      • Pearl was a white woman.
      • Randy had spiker hair and was fully clothed.
  • Working Title: During development, alternate names were "Splittin' Rent" and "Almost Family".
