• Creator Backlash: Although John Cleese loves this film, he felt that the ending was not right, and it should have been happier.
• Technology Marches On: Most of the technology seen in the film was up to date for its time; indeed, the computerised timetable and public address system at the school may have been considered modern, and the Porshe car was brand new. However, many of the problems would be averted by modern technology, especially mobile phones. Brian Stimpson is possibly the one principal character who might have been important enough to have a mobile phone at the time.
• What Could Have Been: The screenplay had a different opening that involved Brian waking up to his clock radio and taking a shower.
• Write Who You Know: Screenwriter Michael Frayn based Brian Stimpson on Peter Dawson, the headmaster of his daughter's school, Eltham Green Comprehensive.
