- Distanced from Current Events: Phase 2 was supposed to be released in 2020 but the author was reluctant to release a story that includes a global pandemic in that specific year. In 2023 Ryukishi stated that releasing a war story would be similarly in poor taste. The episode’s release still has yet to be announced.
- Refitted for Sequel: Miyao's design is partly inspired from that of Virgilius, a character that was supposed to appear in the stillborn Land of the Golden Witch.
- Schedule Slip: Aside from the cases of being Distanced from Current Events, the project has also seen some delay due to Attention Deficit Creator Disorder, as Ryukishi07 has been occupied with overseeing the new anime series Higurashi: When They Cry – Gou in 2020-21 and is also the headwriter on Silent Hill F.
