• The Danza: An odd example. Earl is played by rapper Benjamin Earl Turner.
• Fake Mixed Race: Trish is the daughter of a black father and white mother. Her actress Jaylen Barron is Afro-Latina, of African-American and Mexican descent.
• The Other Darrin: Sean, played by Ziggy Baitinger in the film, is played by Atticus Woodward in the series due to Baitinger having aged out of the role (the series is set in 2018, the year the film was released, implying they take place not long apart).
• Production Posse: Jasmine Cephas Jones (Ashley), Daveed Diggs (co-creator/writer), Andrew Chappelle (Scotty), and Anthony Ramos (Yorkie) were all part of the original Broadway cast of Hamilton.
• Sequel in Another Medium: A television series that acts as a sequel to a film.
• Viewer Gender Confusion: Miles's son Sean is very young and wears his hair in a ponytail, making it pretty easy to mistake him for a girl. Less ambiguous in the subsequent Starz series.
• Write What You Know: Diggs and Casal, two best friends from West Oakland, wrote the film and play Collin and Miles, two best friends from West Oakland. They even make reference to several of their lyrics and recurring gags as Real Life rap duo Getback, such as Casal being the Calvin to Diggs's Hobbes.
