Trivia / Billionaire Boys Club

  • Box Office Bomb: The film's domestic opening day raked in $126 for the distributors. No, not $126,000, $126. In the over-two years between production completion and release, Kevin Spacey had his history as a sexual predator come to light, and thus the film suffered because Spacey had become box office poison. It was also already available on video-on-demand, and its North American theatrical release consisted of only about 11 theaters. The total US gross was $1,349 (again, that’s not a typo), and it made $2.2 million worldwide, a dismal return on its $15 million production budget.
  • Fake American: British actors Taron Egerton and Jeremy Irvine as Americans.
  • Remake Cameo: Judd Nelson played Joe Hunt in the 80s TV movie, then played Joe's father in the 2018 film.
  • Star-Derailing Role: This film had the dishonor of being the first film project starring Kevin Spacey released after multiple men accused him of sexual harassment and assault in October 2017. In addition to getting terrible reviews, the film's box office performance suffered accordingly (see above) as Spacey's presence alone was anathema to audiences. The career of Ansel Elgort (who was coming off of being the lead in the very successful Baby Driver the previous year) was also damaged by this film, with The Goldfinch providing a more-than-effective double tap the following year. Rosanna Arquette, Cary Elwes, and Judd Nelson managed to get out okay given that they have smaller roles. Ditto for Emma Roberts and Suki Waterhouse despite having larger roles. Taron Egerton was the only lead actor to come out of this mess unscathed due to rebounding quickly with his performance as Elton John in 2019's Rocketman.
