Trivia / Better Call Saul S 6 E 10 Nippy

Go To

  • Awesome, Dear Boy:
    • As Saul is her favorite show, Carol Burnett was thrilled to take a part in it.
    • Pat Healy had auditioned for three other roles on Saul, and follows the fan community well enough to know that there was some backlash over his replacing of Don Harvey.
  • California Doubling: Although it was still shot in New Mexico, this is the first episode of the series with no scenes actually taking place there.
  • The Other Darrin: Pat Healy plays Jeff in this episode, replacing Don Harvey who played him in the earlier Flash Forward scenes in Seasons 4 and 5, due to Harvey having a scheduling conflict. This also incorporated re-recording audio from the previous scenes with Healy in Harvey's place for the pre-release teasers, likely to make sure audiences drew the connection that this was the same character from before, just with a new actor. There's also a subtle moment of Painting the Medium: the first time Jeff appears in this episode, the shot is framed identically to his first appearance in "Smoke", appearing in the rear-view mirror of his taxi, so the viewer knows they're the same character.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers:
    • For the montage of Gene ingratiating himself with the security guards, Peter Gould really wanted "Jim on the Move" by Lalo Schifrin, from Mission: Impossible—a Paramount property. Paramount initially refused to play ball with Sony, and dragged out negotiations for the piece, but ultimately acquiesced. After the episode was locked, Gould found out during the recording of the corresponding podcast episode that Pat Healy (Jeff) had previously commissioned a new version of "Jim on the Move" directly from Schifirin, which Paramount had no claim to and which could've been used instead.
    • The store Gene and Jeff steal from was originally meant to be a real department store, but all of the stores they approached refused permission. They ended up using the empty site of a closed-down store, with all the clothes and furniture provided by the props department. The effect was so convincing that Pat Healy initially didn't realise it wasn't a real store.
  • Special Guest: As mentioned above, Carol Burnett does a guest role (as Jeff's mother Marion). Though it's very understated, as her appearance was not flashed in promotionals.
  • Trolling Creator: The pre-release description for the episode was "A new player gets in the game", which led many fans to believe that this was a hint for the long-awaited Walter White cameo. The actual meaning of the phrase ended up to be more mundane: the episode is set entirely during Gene's timeline and the "new player" turned out to be Jeff.
