- A sequel was planned, to be shot in color and widescreen, but it never got past the script.
- A remake was planned in the mid-1980s, with Sybil Danning. Photos of her in costume exist, but the project never got off the ground.
- Tim Burton planned to do his own take on the story, done as a '60s beach movie parody, but it was dropped around the same time the HBO remake was released.

The 1993 remake:
