The 1958 original:

  • Alan Smithee: Director Nathan Juran was not satisfied with his work on this and The Brain from Planet Arous, so he asked to be credited under his middle name Hertz.
  • Follow the Leader: The film was piggybacking off the success of The Amazing Colossal Man and The Incredible Shrinking Man. One scene even uses the same sound effect as the former.
  • I Am Not Spock: Yvette Vickers is best remembered for this film. Upon her tragic 2011 deathnote , the press mentioned the film as if it were her crowning achievement.
  • No Budget: The film's budget was $89,000, which is about $800,000-$900,000 in early 2020s money.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • A sequel was planned, to be shot in color and widescreen, but it never got past the script.
    • A remake was planned in the mid-1980s, with Sybil Danning. Photos of her in costume exist, but the project never got off the ground.
    • Tim Burton planned to do his own take on the story, done as a '60s beach movie parody, but it was dropped around the same time the HBO remake was released.
—latest news say he's again (2024) attached to a remake.

The 1993 remake:

  • Awesome, Dear Boy: Initially uninterested in remaking a "Grade Z" monster movie, once Darryl Hannah saw the script, she was attracted to the idea of the film being an allegory for feminism.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Paul Benedict is cast as a doctor who tries to cure Nancy's gigantism. He himself suffered for several years from acromegaly, an overproduction of growth hormone.
