This timeline pertains to events of the original Phantasy Star tetralogy, from Phantasy Star I to Phantasy Star IV. Spoilers will be unmarked. You Have Been Warned.
Distant past
- Two entities split off from a singular origin, the Great Light and the Profound Darkness. The two battle with one another for dominance, ending with the Great Light banishing the Profound Darkness to a pocket dimension. The star of Algol and its three planets — Palma, Motavia, and Dezolis — are created to act as a seal to keep the Profound Darkness in its interdimensional prison.
AW 1
- Waizz Landale unites the people of Palma under his banner, ending a period of civil strife that engulfed the planet.
AW 157
- First contact between Palma and Dezolis is achieved after a Palman spaceship lands on Dezolis and makes contact with the native Dezolians. Interplanetary travel between Palma, Dezolis, and Motavia follows.

- Odin is born.

- Lutz is born.

- Alis Landale is born.
AW 342
- The events of Phantasy Star I: King Lassic, the ruler of the Algol System, is influenced by a dark cult and becomes a tyrant, shutting down space ports and imposing punitive taxes. Alis and her brother, Nero, join a resistance movement. Nero is murdered by Lassic's forces, prompting Alis to swear revenge against Lassic. She gathers a team, including Myau the muskcat, Odin the hunter, and Lutz the esper, to strike at Lassic, who is influenced by an ancient evil known as "Dark Force". After Lassic is slain and Dark Force is banished, Alis learns that she is related to the true royal family of Algol, and thus, the next in line to rule.
AW 345
- Lassic loyalists sabotage a starship ferrying Alis and Lutz, leaving them stranded beyond Algol. Records of this event are erased.
- Lutz returns to Algol. He begins teaching magic, leading to the proliferation of "Techniques".
Before AW 813
- Alis discovers the planet of Copto, which is under siege by monsters lead by Cablon, and helps the native inhabitants repel the monsters. In her honor, Copto is renamed Alisland.

- The events of Phantasy Star Gaiden
AW 822
- Noah, a starship from the distant planet of Earth, arrives in the Algol System. The Earthmen commence construction of Mother Brain.
AW 842
- Laconia, a precious metal, is discovered on Dezolis. People begin migrating to Dezolis in the hopes of striking it rich mining Laconia.
AW 844
- The Earthmen quietly assassinate the Algol royal family in a staged starship accident.
AW 845
- The Earthmen unleash Mother Brain upon Algol. Mother Brain establishes herself on Palma.
- Lutz, who had been in cryostasis since approximately some time after AW 345, reawakens and goes into hiding on Dezolis.
AW 852
- Mother Brain constructs Climatrol on Motavia for the purpose of planet-scale terraformation. Motavia eventually transforms from a desert wasteland into a verdant paradise.

- Mother Brain outlaws travel by sea.

- Rudolf Steiner is born.

- Rolf Landale, Josh Kain, and Shir Gold are born.

- The events of Phantasy Star Adventure take place.

- Rolf and his parents are caught in a starship collision over Dezolis. Lutz uses his magic powers to rescue Rolf, but his parents perish in the accident. Mother Brain subsequently outlaws interplanetary travel.
AW 1274
- The events of Rolf's chapter in Phantasy Star II Text Adventures begin: Rolf, an 11-year-old orphan in the Motavian capitol of Paseo, becomes highly skilled in swordsmanship. He tries to challenge a famous fencer named O'Conner, but is easily defeated. At the advise of a soothsayer that helps nurse his wounds, Rolf travels to Uzo Island to train.
AW 1281
- An accident in a Laconia mine near the town of Skure on Dezolis, resulting in the release of toxic gas that kills several Palmans and mutates local wildlife. Palmans subsequently flee Dezolis.
- Musk cats left behind by the evacuating Palmans form their own colony in Skure Spaceport.
AW 1282
- Laconia mined for Climatrol is diverted to the Biosystems Lab on Motavia. A power surge occurs, resulting in the creation of Neifirst, an artificial lifeform created from human and biomonster DNA. Neifirst goes berserk and escapes from the lab, stealing DNA materials to create more biomonsters.
- The events of Rolf's chapter in Phantasy Star II Text Adventures continue: Rolf, now age 19, returns to Paseo. He learns that a childhood friend had been abducted and is being held captive in Myra Tower, in the Palman city of Scion. Rolf travels to Scion and finds Shelly, who is being held captive by O'Conner, the fencer that bested him as a child. Rolf bests O'Conner in a duel, after which Shelly reveals that she was never kidnapped: she was a government agent, and O'Conner was General Governor of Paseo. The "kidnapping" was a test to determine if Rolf had matured and improved as a swordsman. With the test passed, Rolf is offered a job as a government agent.
AW 1283
- Nei is created from Neifirst and becomes an independent lifeform.
AW 1283-1284
- The events of Nei's chapter in Phantasy Star II Text Adventures begin: Nei is found and taken in by a couple of elderly scientists, who raise her like a daughter. Nei's adoptive parents, however, are tragically murdered by Darum, a mercenary hired by Biosystem Lab scientists to destroy Nei. Nei is forced to escape alone.
AW 1284
- The events of Nei's chapter in Phantasy Star II Text Adventures continues: After aimlessly wondering and being feared as a monster by humans for several months, Nei arrives in Paseo. After a series of strange adventures in the city, she meets Rolf, who befriends her and takes her in.
- The events of Phantasy Star II:
- Rolf is sent to investigate an outbreak of biomonsters from the Biosystems Lab. He and Nei become wrapped up in a conspiracy by Mother Brain. The Climatrol systems are destroyed, wreaking havoc on Motavia's weather, in a battle with Neifirst that ends with the deaths of Neifirst and Nei.
- Rolf and his companions are arrested for Climatrol's destruction and imprisoned on the sattelite of Gaila, in orbit over Palma. The satellite's orbit suddenly begins to decay, giving Rolf and his companions an opportunity to escape. After fleeing from the satellite, Gaila falls and collides with Palma, destroying the planet completely. In the moments before Palma's destruction, several "worldships" launch from the planet.
- Rolf and company flee to Dezolis, where they meet Lutz. The esper explains that an evil force permeates Algol and has infected Mother Brain. In order to dispel this evil, he will need the Nei Weapons scattered across Dezolis. Once the weapons are gathered, Lutz explains how Rolf was a descendant of Alis Landale, how he saved him from a shuttle accident, and how the introduction of Mother Brain sowed discord across Algol. In order to save the star system, Mother Brain must be destroyed.
- Rolf and company are transported aboard a mysterious ship, where they are confronted by Dark Force, and after banishing Dark Force, Mother Brain. In the ensuing battle, Mother Brain is destroyed. Unfortunately, Lutz informs Rolf that he cannot return to Motavia. Deeper inside the ship, Rolf and company are confronted by the creators of Mother Brain, the Earthmen, who fled from their homeworld after it was polluted to the point of becoming uninhabitable. They created Mother Brain with the intent of disarming the population of Motavia, making it easy to conquer them. With Mother Brain destroyed, however, the Earthmen's scheme has been halted. A battle erupts between Rolf's party and the Earthmen, the outcome of which remains a mystery.
AW 1285
- Wren is built to maintain Algol's climate aboard the space station Zelan.
AW 1299
- Lutz dies. His memories and will are transfered into a Telepathy Ball device and stored in the Esper's Mansion on Dezolis.
AW 1960
- Demi is built to maintain the central control system "Nurvus" on Motavia after an accident causes the system's AI to malfunction.
AW 2199
- Raja is born.
AW 2260
- Hahn Malley is born.
AW 2265
- Gryz is born.
AW 2266
- Kyra Tierney is born.
AW 2268
- Chaz Ashley is born.
AW 2281
- Chaz Ashley has an encounter with a mysterious woman who calls herself "Nei". Some time after, Wren performs a memory wipe on Chaz to erase his memories of the encounter, but it is only partially successful as Chaz continues to have faint recollections of the encounter within his subconscious.
AW 2282
- Rika is created.
AW 2284
- War breaks out on Alisa III, one of the worldships that launched from Palma prior to its destruction, between the Orakian and Layan clans. The war ends with the defeat of Dark Force aboard Alisa III, who is sealed in a sunken temple by Orakio's Sword.
- The events of Phantasy Star IV take place, and end in Chaz Ashley and his allies defeating the Profound Darkness.
