Good Luck, Studio is is a play written by Henry Shields and directed by Henry Lewis. They are both part of the Mischief Theatre Company.
It’s the final night of recording for the beloved children's TV show Wibble the Dragon. The show is massively over budget and under-written. With one hour left to film 16 pages and an audience of children getting more and more impatient, the cast and crew know big cuddly heads are going to roll.
The last thing anyone needs is a failed actor showing up with a sinister vendetta and his own dragon costume. In this adult take on a kids’ TV show, more than just careers will die.
Good Luck, Studio contains examples of:
- Captain Ersatz: Wibble the Dragon is essentially Barney & Friends in a medieval setting, complete with the star being in the costume of a kid-appealing creature.
- Dysfunction Junction: The entire crew of Wibble the Dragon are losing their minds, such as Toby (who plays the titular character) clearly being unhappy with the conditions of his role, but they must still entertain the children.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: David's death at the end comes around from his victims giving him exactly what he wants, then detonating his own bomb's trigger after they've ensured their own safety.
- Hostage Situation: David eventually takes the cast of Wibble the Dragon hostage, threatening them at gunpoint and with blowing himself and them up with a homemade bomb to force them into letting him perform.
- Outliving One's Offspring: David lost his daughter to leukemia, and his crazed actions to get the role of Wibble the Dragon are an end result of it having been her favorite show.
- The Show Must Go On: Despite several increasingly dangerous setbacks, the cast and crew of Wibble the Dragon do not stop the show for the sake of its child audience.
- Troubled Production: An In-Universe example in Wibble the Dragon. Too much money has already been spent on it, and the cast is run ragged from having to film 16 pages worth of script in the span of a hour, all while an audience of children gradually becomes more riled up. And then David arrives and attempts to hijack the show.
