Beware of unmarked spoilers!
Pretty much anything you see in Dr. Andonuts's mind that isn't Nightmare Fuel is this instead.
Highlights include:
- His guilt over what he thinks he's done to the four chosen children.
- Him becoming more and more distant from his wife due to his repressed homosexuality, which leads to her confronting him about their marriage and their son's future, and getting murdered by Dr. Andonuts out of fear of losing his son. Her words are especially heartbreaking if you've been through a divorce, or your parents have divorced."Don't you love me?""Is there something wrong with me?"
- If you think Andonuts is happy about what he did to his wife, think again. He's completely despondent when you visit her grave:Dr. Andonuts, to himself: "She left so suddenly..."[..] "You know why, don't you? Everyone can see it on your face.""Your guilty face... your guilty...""Your... you're..."
- Dr. Andonuts begging for his life:"YOU WENT INTO AN OLD MAN'S MIND SO YOU COULD KILL HIM.""I don't want to die.""Leave me alone. Just go away, and leave me alone.""i have no weapon. QUIT PICKING ON ME."
- There's also the final boss fight, which, when stripped of its memetic status, basically boils down to a desperate, frenzied old man fighting as hard as he can to stay alive and an exhausted bounty hunter trying to get back home.
- The fact that, no matter what you do, no matter what ending you choose, Dr. Andonuts is going to die. And judging from his last lines in his boss fight, he died furious and in agony. And if you take the "Bad" ending, it's implied that he died in terror. Oh, and Varik dies in that ending, too."You see how pathetic I am? Even when I'm in my own mind. Even when I'm fighting for my life. I guess... I guess I'm better off dead."
- Aside from Dr. Andonuts himself, two other enemies also count as being able to make a play tear up a little:
- The Remember Me? enemies — distorted, blueish versions of the Shattered Man with a smiley face who attack via hugging you, making Varik cry because of how much they missed him, or by becoming "hard to think about again", use the music that plays when Buzz Buzz is dying for their battle theme, and just wave goodbye when they're defeated.
- The Desperate Survivors enemies — bloodied, crying versions of the Annoying Old Party Man who apologize for fighting you, spend most of their time wasting their turns due to being unable to bring themselves to hurt you, do next to no damage whenever they do attack, apologize for you killing them, and always drop the Last Ration they so desperately clung to.
