Tear Jerker: 24 Hour Party People
While not a surprise to viewers, as it's based on real, life, Ian Curtis' suicide midway through the film is still very sad to watch and is a startlingly somber moment in an otherwise funny, snarky film. Tony Wilson's stunned reaction ("he's dead?") and farewell at the funeral ("bye, son") are all the most powerful for how underplayed they are.
