Given that NPC and hero deaths were allowed when kagescorpionakki took over, sad moments were almost guaranteed.

  • Dragon Lad's death. He was trying to save a child when Dr. Zoom showed up and tried to kill the child, as that would "make him a better hero." Dragon Lad ends up saving the child, but gets his neck snapped in the process.
  • Magpie's first death and Yoko's reaction. Magpie gets incinerated by friendly fire, and although she's immortal, Yoko doesn't know that. Poor Yoko collapses in grief and mental agony (from Noboru).
  • Ophelia's death. She was ripped in half by Azi Dahaka, one half teleported to outer space, the other teleported into Alex + Selby's walls. She then self-destructed despite her parents' pleas.
  • Marah's death. She sacrifices herself for Dexter. They're lovers. You do the math.
  • Ryan's backstory. Losing control over his powers for a moment leads to a giant smoking crater and being branded "Collateral." What's more, his girlfriend Star Girl died.
  • Layla's backstory. Her home was destroyed by a superhero fight, leading to her current hatred for superheroes.
  • Kirstin's backstory. She's a homeless child (albeit with car powers) who has to steal to survive.
  • Matten's death. She was basically Ret-Gone'd by Azi Dahaka, being forgotten by most.
    • Ryan blames himself for her death, and breaks down.
  • After Jumping Bean rescues Black Wolf's family and Red Tiger's older brother, she finds that her parents are missing. Two butterflies crossing her path symbolize their spirits visiting her—JB's parents are already dead.
  • The Phantasmic Lurker's backstory. It used to be Wilma until the Earth was erased and she fell into despair, turning into a Dream Eater in the process. Her powers have turned into cruel mockeries of the ones she had before.
  • Alice's backstory. Her home burns down, her family dies, and she blames herself for dropping a lantern and starting the fire. It may not even be her fault, but her unscrupulous psychiatrist.
  • Shelly's backstory. His kindred were murdered by Zugzwang and a company they were manipulating. Fortunately for him, he was saved by Makquer'el, but it turned him into a bit of a recluse.
  • Koda's backstory. First, she discovers that she's not the "original" Koda after her family is killed by Zugzwang, and she's actually a clone made out of the Digital Substance her parents invented. Second, she is now being hunted by OtherWorld Corp, the company that had a hand in the explosion that killed her parents. Third, she is forced to play a high-stakes game—loss of all her Lives spells instant death—and it's her only form of offense!
