Tear Jerker / Space Jam: A New Legacy

Go To

  • If you are a '90s kid or a fan of '90s memorabilia, (retro) games, or Nintendo (especially the Game Boy), then you are going to tear up at LeBron's coach bullying him into throwing away his perfectly functioning Game Boy. At least, since the Game Boy (which is Made of Indestructium) was on top of a relatively clean pizza box which was on top of the garbage can, someone else could "adopt" the Game Boy.
  • When LeBron first arrives at Tune World, he discovers that Bugs is the only one there. Bugs tearfully explains that Al-G convinced the other Looney Tunes to leave Tune World and go to different realities. Some fans even noted that this incident effectively gave Bugs abandonment issues, making it even more tragic.
  • LeBron being so into stressing the importance of "fundamental basketball" that he ends up preventing the Tunes from acting looney... even using his "inside these lines" analogy on them after one trick too many from Bugs. This leads to a temporary argument before the court forms, as Bugs is clearly annoyed by how he tries to force him and his friends be how he wants them without considering their feelings. Even sadder remembering how excited LeBron was to meet Bugs at first.
LeBron: Look, Bugs, you already got what you wanted: your friends, Tune World...but I still need my son back! Outside these lines, be as looney as you want, but inside, you do what I say! [forcibly snatches Bugs' marker away, making the others gasp]
Bugs: [narrows his eyes] Oh, I see. You're that kind of king.
LeBron: Looks Bugs, it's My Way or the Highway!
  • The Tune Squad later gets into a real argument where LeBron calls out the Tunes for not taking this seriously since the fate of his family and, thousands of people, and the Tunes themselves are on the line. They argue that they're trying their best... trying to play like him and it's not working for Dom Ball. The way Lola cradles her arm and Bugs sounds outright tired of having to repeat it so many times leads to him realizing just how restricting he's been acting towards them and his son.
  • Mixed with Heartwarming Moments: LeBron James and Dom reconciling and declaring their love for each other, touching everyone. Even Bugs is reduced to a crying wreck in response to this sweet father-and-son moment.
LeBron: Dom... your game is amazing, son. But I guess I would've known that if I'd listened more. I'm sorry I didn't. For me, when I was a kid, the things that I went through to get where I am now...I had to be a certain way. Yeah, it helped me win games, but not so much being a dad. I'm still learning how. You're teaching me. I want you to Be Yourself. [tears up] Do you understand how much I love you? Do you understand how important you are to me? How very special you are? I mean... I don't even know if I'm saying this right. [tosses the basketball away]
Dom: ...Sounds right to me. [hugs LeBron, also tearing up] I love you, Dad.
LeBron: I love you too, son.
  • Bugs' Heroic Sacrifice and the aftermath, which puts his "death" from What's Opera, Doc? to shame. Even if the viewer knows that there's no way it will stick, the sequence does an effective job of selling it. Had Bugs not reappeared in the final scene, many of his fans would have been traumatized at the prospect of their beloved rabbit now gone forever.
    • If you look closely, you'll see that Lola starts running towards Bugs while he performs the glitch move. She knows his intentions to sacrifice himself, but is unfortunately too late to stop him, and is Forced to Watch as Bugs glitches, rendering him weakened, and ultimately faded away in her arms.
    • The Tunes are all uncharacteristically somber during the sequence. Special mention goes to Elmer Fudd, who looks like he could burst into tears any second, Road Runner, who, for once, is just as sad as the other Tunes, Daffy, who's equally upset at what's happening to his constant rival, and even Yosemite Sam, who feels genuine sadness about his enemy being about to die.
      • Of note is how delighted the Tunes are when their world is restored, and they happily turn to Bugs, expecting him to get back to normal as well...only for them to be devastated when his glitching hasn't been repaired.
    • Some of Bugs' last words are expressing contentment that at least they're all together again, but he Disappears into Light soon afterward. He didn't really get to enjoy it (before coming back, at least) and the others probably felt terrible at the accidental reminder that they'd left him alone all that time.
Bugs: We did it... we're all back together again.
      Lola: [close to tears] Bugs...
      Bugs: That's all, folks. [vanishes]
