  • All the scenes of Kaylee and Kevin trying to comfort each other. They start the film somewhat nonplussed by the surreal things that happen to them, but as the horrors begin to escalate and the gravity of their situation starts to hit them, the points where they try to help each other out through the limited understanding and ability they have — such as Kevin, seeing his sister freaking out after seeing her parents doing something she couldn't understand but was scared by, going out to get her juice — makes you realize: these are children, and they're in danger they don't understand.
  • On the heels of the Eye Scream scene, hearing Kevin full-on sobbing in pain, while the camera cuts to different darkened angles of the empty house, is one of the saddest and most horrifying moments of the movie. The sounds are heartrendingly realistic of a kid helpless to react to pain in any way other than uncontrollable crying and wailing, unable to help themself or calm themself down — a response that should bring adults running to help in hard-wired instinctive reflex, but the camera shots only rub in how there's no one coming for Kevin. It again really drives home he's a terrified small child in terrible pain, alone with an uncaring, monstrously sadistic captor, stuck in the dark with no grownups around to comfort or protect him and now completely alone without the comfort of his sister, knowing Kaylee is unable to help him, stuck in a horrific situation of her own, and the sight of her now would only make the poor kid cry harder if she were around. It's the most awful situation imaginable, communicated in a heartbreakingly effective way.
  • The devastating Hope Spot of Kevin calling 911. Unlike the previous attempt around the start of the film, he manages to get someone on the other end and tells them "I hurt myself and feel sick." The dispatcher — especially upon Kevin telling them he's only four years old — gently instructs him to "be a brave little guy for [them]" and to stay on the line as they send help, only for the call to suddenly shut off, with Kevin discovering that the entity has somehow turned the phone into a toy. We never hear of any help being sent ever again.
  • There's a ton of different ways to interpret the ending, but all point to being pretty damn bleak: After "572 days", Kaylee is of indeterminate status and Kevin is implied to be in a great state of inescapable suffering, with blood splattering and then un-splattering ad nauseum while the poor kid cries out for his mother. While in bed, he sees an indistinct Nightmare Face asking him to go to sleep, and as he asks for its name, we get... the end of the film.
