Tear Jerker / Olivia Rodrigo

Go To

Being an album mostly made up of Break-Up Songs, SOUR has plenty of this.

  • "drivers license" is a song about how Olivia was excited to drive to her ex-boyfriend's house after receiving her license, only to feel heartbroken by having to watch him move on from her, despite the fact that she still loves him.
  • "enough for you" is this in spades. The lyrics describe how Olivia tried to change herself by wearing makeup, reading all the self-help books her ex read, and learning everything she could about him, all because she thought "[he'd] like [her] more". It gets especially painful when you hear the line, "maybe I'm just not as interesting as the girls you had before". Not to mention one verse mentioned that she was "used and discarded" by her ex.
  • "brutal" starts off the album with a very harsh inversion of an Ode to Youth. Lyrics such as "I'm so insecure, I think, that I'll die before I drink" emphasize how hopeless and angry the narrator feels about her own teenage life, with a dose of Self-Deprecation to match, in sharp contrast to most songs about being young, such as Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream", which "brutal" references:
And I'm so sick of seventeen
    Where's my fuckin' "teenage dream"?
  • "traitor" is about someone who knew their partner was cheating on them and lying to them, and is heartbroken to find that their worst fears were justified, as upon breaking up the partner gets with the person that they were worried about.
    • Made even sadder by the music video, as it shows Olivia doing fun things with her friends such as driving through the suburbs in a truck, hanging out at the arcade and climbing over a fence to go swim in a nearby pool. Olivia partakes in the activities, but the pained expression on her face makes it clear that she is unable to enjoy these things due to her sadness over the betrayal.
  • "jealousy, jealousy" takes a... break from the break-up songs and describes the Always Someone Better mentality that some teenagers feel while scrolling through social media, and the anxiety that results from it. "Comparison is killing me slowly" hits especially hard.
  • "happier" shows the reluctance of the narrator to move on and wish her ex and his new girl happiness. She hasn't quite reached I Want My Beloved to Be Happy levels yet, which makes the song all the more relatable and real for anyone going through a breakup.
  • "hope ur okay" is heartbreaking.
    • The first verse is about an old friend who suffered Abusive Parents, and how the narrator hasn't seen him in years and can only hope he's doing better. The verse ends with, "Don't know if I'll see you again someday, but if you're out there, I hope that you're okay," which could simply mean she isn't sure if their paths will cross again or if he's hearing this song... or it could mean that she's worried he's dead.
    • The second verse is about another friend who was Promoted to Parent, and whose parents hated her for being a lesbian. The narrator doesn't see her much anymore and still misses her.
    • "I love you, and I hope that you're okay."
