Tear Jerker / Love, Victor

Go To

  • Victor's grandpa making hurtful, homophobic comments about Benji and his boyfriend (like that it may turn his younger brother gay) while Victor is hiding the fact that he isn't straight himself.
  • Victor eventually calls his grandfather out for his homophobic comments, but he doesn't tell that he isn't straight himself. His father then tells him that he is proud of him for standing up to his grandfather and that he was right in calling him out. This makes Victor hopeful for just a moment that his father has a more positive outlook on LGBTQ people than he thought. His father then goes on to say that the reason Victor was right is that it is none of their business who some strangers love. And then he says that he hopes Victor's younger brother doesn't turn out to be gay. The look on Victor's face after this is really heartbreaking.
  • When Victor kisses Benji for the first time in their motel room, he immediately runs out in embarrassment and practically has a panic attack in the hallway. When he tells Simon that he hates himself for feeling his attraction, the latter speaks for the viewers by telling him how it breaks his heart to see Victor so torn up over who he is.
  • The awkwardness emanating from Armando and Isabel after Victor comes out to them is painful. Even after Pilar models the perfect reaction by simply hugging Victor and telling him she loves him, they just sit there.
  • Felix’s arc in season 2. His mom is dealing with bipolar disorder, and he has been acting as her caregiver for years. Eventually, she is committed after a manic episode involving Lake’s mom. When child services allows him to stay with the Salazars, the episode ends with Felix breaking down in Isabel’s arms.
  • Lake’s guilt over inadvertently getting Felix’s mom committed after just trying to help her clearly struggling boyfriend.
  • Isabel and Victor’s relationship becomes strained when she struggles to accept his sexuality and relationship with Benji. It gets to a point where Victor reveals that it’s hard for him to be proud of himself when she keeps making him feel like being gay is something too shameful to talk about.
  • When Victor tells Isabel he hid his troubles with Benji from her out of fear that she’d be happy his first gay relationship was ending, she is taken aback. Her facial expressions show a mother who is horrified by the hurt she had unintentionally caused her child, and hearing Isabel say that she’ll never forgive herself for how she reacted to Victor coming out can inspire a few tears from LGBTQ audiences with complicated parent relationships.
