General
- Through conversations with Dys and Tang you can eventually learn that their mother struggled with mental illness and substance abuse, and ended up committing suicide. Her death has clearly affected both twins deeply, with Dys even wondering if their mother loved him at all.
- Vace's eight-heart event, where he publicly beats up Rex for becoming "too soft" for a Helio. It's gut-wrenching to see the friendly, easygoing dogboy getting repeatedly punched by a man who exudes toxic masculinity, especially since Vace broke Rex's arm in a hazing session when they were children. To make matters worse, Sol can cheer for Vace as he continues beating up Rex, forcing Nomi to pull Vace away from him.
- Cal's eight-heart event, if Sol tells him to back off from Tammy because she's "[theirs]". Cal, who promised to Tammy when they were kids that he'll marry her when they're older, breaks down crying, feeling betrayed by Sol, but then begrudgingly accepts their decision to court Tammy and tells them to take good care of her. This scene makes you feel guilty of breaking up their wholesome Childhood Friend Romance just to date Tammy, especially since the only other way to do so is by bullying her into being too nervous to ask Cal out.
Character deaths
- One death can occur as early as the first year of the colony’s existence: Tammy, a sweet, gentle girl dies in a freak accident, electrocuted by faulty machinery. This is sure to be a Player Punch, as her death is unavoidable on a first playthrough.
- Just like Tammy, her father, Tonin, can die early on, attacked by a manticore on an expedition. If Sol tries but fails to save him from the manticore, they're traumatized by Tonin's injuries as he's taken back to the colony. He then mistakes Sol for Tammy on his deathbed, and Sol can play along so he can die remembering his daughter. Nonetheless, if Tammy is alive at this point, she will be absolutely heartbroken by her father's death.
- If Sol doesn't manage to bolster the colony’s food supplies enough to stave off the famine, their mother eventually dies from overwork and malnourishment. You’re then treated to the lovely image of Sol's father cradling her dead body, completely broken from grief.
- Unless you manage to find a cure for Shimmer, the airborne disease that plagues the colony each Pollen Season, Sol's father will end up passing away from it. Sol can even visit him on his deathbed, which like Flulu's death, has a special image accompanying it. With both heartbreaking scenarios, it’s possible for Sol to become an orphan at age 16.
- If Geranium is the only member of the family to die, Flulu responds by completely shutting down, to the point that Sol needs a certain score in Empathy to get her speak to them at all. If the Empathy check succeeds, all Flulu can manage is an extremely strained attempt at speaking to them the way Geranium would. In this timeline, Flulu's epilogue mentions she and Sol grow estranged over the following years.
- Anemone’s brother, Kom, is killed during the first Faceless attack on the colony. Notably, his death is the only one in the game that is completely unavoidable no matter what you do, and it serves as the Cynicism Catalyst for Anemone’s storyline. If Sol attends Kom's funeral, they see Anemone burst into tears as she hugs Kom's lifeless body before he's cremated. If she made him a birthday gift before this, she takes it out and slips it under the sheets as she continues mourning his death.
- Sym’s death in a manticore attack, since he sacrifices his life to save Sol from a whole pack of them. This is especially gut wrenching if you’re romancing him, as it happens moments after you share a first kiss. Even though he eventually gets better thanks to his Body Backup Drive, Sol (and first-time players) won’t know this at the time.
- The "Tangent's Cure" ending, due to having the biggest death toll both in terms of background living beings and named characters. Specifically, Tang and Instance successfully create the bioweapon under Lum's orders, and the whole colony moves into the Helio as the virus eradicates all Vertumnan wildlife in preparation for terraforming the planet for farming. However, Cal is killed for violently protesting against the program, Instance commits suicide a few months in, and the surviving colonists are forced to continue living under Lum's fascist rule, not emerging from the ship until 10 years later. This is before getting into the fact that Symbiosis, Socks, any native pet Sol may have acquired, any animals kept in Geoponics for anything other than meat and any animals Sol may have had a good-to-neutral interaction with while exploring are killed as a matter of course.
