  • Susannah Aurifaber's fate in "Sanctuary Sparrow". Her family treated her like a serf and her rich father refused to grant her a dowry, and in a final indignity took her one point of pride—her management of the household—away from her because her sister-in-law demanded it. It's hard to imagine how she could not determine on robbing them in vengeance as she ran away, but it's also sad that her family's abuse made her less able to see how she was valued. The locksmith's apprentice was willing to marry her without a dowry, and her lover Iestyn said that he would have taken her barefoot in a shift after her death—he didn't care one whit about the gold and would have run away with her penniless if she asked him to.
