Tear Jerker / A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master

Go To

  • Kristen lets out a heart-tugging Big "NO!" when she sees the empty classroom seats of the last of her True Companions from the previous movie amid her (correct) fear that Freddy is killing again.
  • Kristen's death, especially when her boyfriend Rick tries to rush into her room to put out the fire, but Alice holds him back because she knows it's already too late.
    • One can only imagine how Elaine Parker felt after the death of her daughter, especially since it was her own fault. Even worse, the last thing Kristen said to her was, "You just murdered me."
  • The deaths of Kincaid, Joey, and Kristen mean that Nancy's Heroic Sacrifice in the previous film was All for Nothing. The Dream Warriors, the last of the Elm Street children, are dead. Freddy actually won.
  • Debbie's stunned, crushed reaction to Shiela's death is pretty sobering and believable.
Debbie: What 17-year-old has fatal asthma? God, she was gonna be a doctor…
    • Alice breaking down after the sinking realization that she pulled Sheila into her dream makes it even worse.
      Alice: It was Freddy.
      Debbie: Enough with that crap!
Alice: I saw it! It was my dream! I brought Shelia in! (realization sinks in) Oh, God… (starting to cry) I brought Shelia in, like Kristen did with me…
      Rick: (tries to comfort Alice)
Alice: (pulls away from him) No, don't! I gave Shelia to him! And now she's dead! (breaks down sobbing and runs off)
  • Alice imagining her brother Rick popping out of the coffin at his funeral and telling her he escaped Freddy. It's definitely not Played for Laughs and is a somber moment in a movie that can get otherwise very goofy. For anyone who's ever been to the funeral of a loved one, it definitely hits home as a form of wish fulfillment.
    Rick: Hey… what's with the tears? I wouldn't leave you. C'mon, don’t cry.
    • A lot of other movies (horror or otherwise) tend to play such a sequence as the daydreamer believing it's all real, only to get snapped back to reality and feel crushed. Part of what makes this scene so effective is that Alice never once believes Rick is really still alive, even though she clearly wants to.
      Alice: [sadly] No more daydreams.
Rick: Well, gotta go. [gets back in the coffin] Good night. [closes the lid]
  • Debbie's death as she's shown to be a very likeable and kind hearted person who was trying to come to terms with the death of her best friend. Not to mention how prolonged it is.
