Tear Jerker / A Legionary's Life

Go To

Given this game takes place across two wars, there are bound to be sad moments.

In General

  • Any time you fight a battle alongside a fellow legionary and he dies. You take a severe morale hit.
  • Failing a sacrifice due to having high intelligence. Apart from wasting some of your limited funds of money it also means you no longer believe the Gods will protect you.

The First Campaign

  • Dying in the siege of New Carthage. By this point your character is just a conscripted teen marched far away from home and who had his life cut short.
  • In the battle of New Carthage, after your second fight, you'll have the option to reflect on your first kill and to feel pity over the dead levy spearman. It's not lost on you that he was also conscripted to fight for his home.
  • Trying and failing to convince your fellow legionaries not to kill a group of slaves after the fall of a Carthaginian fortress. You end up watching in horror as they're massacred and you have nightmares about it for days to come.
  • One random event is to realize that one of your fellow legionaries will be feeling particularly upset. If you ask him and pass a charisma check he'll admit that he enlisted to avenge his father's death at Cannae but is now afraid of losing his own life.
  • After having a bad dream, you might remember an uncle who was a veteran and had nightmares regularly. You realize something is wrong but have no idea how to fix it.

The Second Campaign

  • Talking to a veteran who survived the battle of Cannae. In addition to the mental trauma of experiencing that carnage he had to face undeserved disgrace because the people blame him and the other survivors for the defeat.
  • Dying at the battle of Zama. You fought against the Carthaginians your entire adult life and died at the last possible moment.

The Third Campaign

  • Dying in this campaign after having survived for years. Especially if it's just due to one string of bad rolls.
