Prince of Lan Ling (兰陵王, Lán Líng Wáng) is a 2013 Chinese series starring Feng Shao Feng, Ariel Lin, and Daniel Chan. It's very loosely based on a true story.
During the Northern Qi Dynasty a prophecy foretells that victory would go to the one who has the priestess's blessing. Yang Xue Wu, the last priestess of her clan, unwittingly becomes embroiled in a war between Northern Qi and Northern Zhou. Although she foresees a tragic fate for Gao Chang Gong, the Prince of Lan Ling and a general of Northern Qi, she falls in love with him and helps him win the war against Yuwen Yong, the Emperor of Northern Zhou.
Not to be confused with the series Princess of Lanling King.
Contains examples of:
- Animal Motifs: Lin Shi compares Yuwen Hu and Yuwen Yong to wolves: a greedy wolf for Yuwen Hu, and a starved wolf for Yuwen Yong.
- Evil Uncle: Yuwen Hu, for Yuwen Yong and his brothers. He poisons Yuwen Yu and abuses Yuwen Yong.
- Genocide Survivor: Xue Wu and her grandmother are among the few survivors of the Sorceress Clan.
- Hidden Elf Village: White Mountain Village is hidden behind a magic fog to keep the outside world out.
- Historical Domain Character: Gao Chang Gong, Yuwen Yong, and many other characters are based on real people.
- Historical Ugliness Update: Downplayed. The real Gao Chang Gong was considered the most beautiful man in China during his lifetime (though no contemporary portraits survive). Feng Shao Feng is handsome, but certainly not the most beautiful man in China.
- Very Loosely Based on a True Story: Gao Chang Gong existed and he really did win battles against Northern Zhou, but it's safe to say there were no priestesses or prophecies involved in his victory.
- Worthy Opponent: Yuwen Yong sees Gao Chang Gong as this.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Heavenly Maidens have helped emperors take the throne in the past, and the emperors repaid them by executing them.
