Sandbox / Multi BFG

Go To

Laconic Tile: In this game BFGs aren't exclusive / are as numerous as mundane guns.

The Standard FPS Guns with some additional help of the Sorting Algorithm of Weapon Effectiveness dictates, that there only can be more of the lesser/mundane guns of the same kind. In other words a game can feature multiple handguns, shotguns, rifles or SMGs, but when it come to weapons which pack more of a punchlike , there can be only one of a kind.

The reasons for this vary. Maybe the designer insists BFGs should be rare/exclusive, maybe they think there would be little difference between them, maybe they worry, that the lesser guns would be rendered obsolete and maybe they just don't want to bother coding another gun.

Some games however, decided to screw this rule and introduced multiple instances of the same type of BFG. To distinguish between them they vary greatly both in inflicted damage and additional abilities. One launcher may fire heatseeking missiles, the other one's are laser-guided. One Plasma Cannon's projectile flies straight, the other one may be affected by gravity or even bounce off solid surfaces.

Examples:

Action Games
  • Commando 2: features as many BFGs as mundane weapons. Said BFGs include arcing Nayberg NS 30, straight firing P25 "Maisto", enemy tracking C25 "Marugo" and massive R25 "Pequeno" which fires volleys of 4 rockets at once.
First Person Shooter
  • Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator features two different rocket launchers, one of which fires more powerful homing missiles.
  • Rise of the Triad features "mundane" Bazooka, heatseeking missile launcher and "drunk" missile launcher. They're all Throwaway Guns though.
  • Unreal Series
    • Unreal's mission pack Return to Na Pali introduced additional Terran rocket launcher. It's not as powerful as the Eightball, but considerably easier to handle and the rockets can be guided by pointing your crosshair.
    • Besides the usual six-barrelled launcher Unreal Tournament introduced the Redeemer, which is a portable man-packed remote-controlled nuke.
    • Unreal Tournament 2004 introduced AvRiL, which supposedly packs more punch than the standard tri-barrel "Trident", but the missiles also fly slower and there are longer delays between shots. As the name implies, the missiles home in on vehicles only.
