Roleplay / The Spook Club

Go To

The Spook Club is a Horror/Slice of Life Play-by-Post Game hosted on Roleplayer Guild, created on 8th May 2015 by user Nightmare Bunny. It was originally known as 'Spooked!' but had to be changed in order to avoid confusion with a web series of the same name.

Set in the fictional town of Sandalwood, 'The Spook Club' follows the adventures of the Supernatural and Paranormal Information Reconnaissance Investigation Team (S.P.I.R.I.T. for short), a ghost-busting school club dedicated to discovering the supernatural, and run by the school Nightmare Fetishist, Andy Anderson.

Its sister roleplays are Pokémon: The Shadow of Nemesis, a Pokémon roleplay set in Johto, and Herculean Academy, a superhero school roleplay, with both games involving some of the same players.

The Spook Club contains examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: Andy Anderson.
  • Agent Mulder: Andy, who believes firmly in almost every kind of supernatural being that there is. Unsurprisingly, given the nature of the roleplay, he's usually right.
  • Agent Scully: Sidney, who only joins S.P.I.R.I.T. to prove that the supernatural does not exist.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Andy can barely see without his glasses on, something that becomes a bit of a problem when the bathroom ghost makes the lights go out and he accidentally steps on his.
  • Body Horror: Lots and lots. Ogo's description of Eloise Jenkins' ghost and the world behind the mirror is one of the more prominent examples.
  • Comically Serious: Andy takes everything seriously. Everything.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Gray, thanks to his long purple hair. This has already caused some confusion with a couple of the characters.
  • Foil: Sidney to Andy, and vice versa. She's a hardcore skeptic who basically lives for gossip, and a bit of a practical jokester to boot. He, on the other hand, believes in everything from ghosts to cryptids to demons (the one exception being aliens), doesn't give a damn about his position on the social hierarchy, and can't take a joke.
    • Alternatively, Andy to Tori. Tori is the school's resident popular girl, and Andy's pretty much a social outcast thanks to his love of the occult. However, Tori admires Andy for how he isn't afraid to be himself, while she often finds herself pretending to be someone she's not in order to maintain her popularity.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Eloise is a villainous example.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Both Nathan and Eloise. Eloise cannibalises the ghosts of the people she abducts on Nathan's orders to gain more power, while Nathan eats their bodies to remove what's keeping them tied to the mortal plane.
  • Love Dodecahedron: There's already one in the works for this RP. The shipping wars in the O.O.C. are real.
  • Mr. Exposition: Andy has this position thanks to being the club leader and the only one interested in the supernatural enough to start info-dumping all over the place about it.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Andy, who likes the supernatural enough to start a whole club dedicated to it.
  • Oral Fixation: Deborah usually has food or drink on her person. When she doesn't, she had a tendency to chew on her hair, nails, occasionally some gum etc.
  • Pretty Boy:
    • Gray Crowell, who is apparently rather dashing and possesses some very feminine features.
    • Connie Sweets is also notably quite the pretty boy, at least according to Andy and Brody.
  • Running Gag: Lowkey brings up Andy is love, Andy is life every time a character gets shipped with Andy.
  • Retcon: Angie/Andy's gender, about two days into the roleplay.
  • The Rival: Sidney to Andy, who's determined to prove her wrong about her disbelief towards the supernatural.
  • Serious Business: The titular Spook Club, for Andy. And also basically everything else, also for Andy.
  • Stepford Snarker:
    • Deborah's snarky persona is really only a mask to hide the fact she's incredibly shy.
    • Brody hides his insecurities by snarking and dissing almost everyone he meets.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Twin siblings Gray and Violet are both named after colors.
  • Trapped-with-Monster Plot:
    • The first arc, in which the club goes to check out a haunted bathroom (sans Brody, who's already been abducted by the bathroom ghost)... and then the door slams shut and locks behind them.
    • In the same arc, Brody is dragged into the mirror world by the ghost. He's then essentially trapped there with said ghost and Nathan Duarte, with no hope of escaping by himself.
  • Unholy Matrimony: Apart from the fact that they didn't get married, Nathan Duarte's relationship with Eloise's ghost falls under this category.
