The film is infinitely quotable, providing several trope names and many a meme, and lends itself well to references in other works.

Fan Fiction
  • Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts:
    • There are several shout-outs to The Princess Bride in the scenes where Alfred is teaching Bruce to fence.
    • Matches Malone, the identity Batman assumes to make contacts in the seedier part of Gotham, is basically Bruce doing an impression of Peter Falk as Columbo, in-universe as well. When he's explaining to Robin how that came about (the short version is that he had to invent a cover story on the spot, and that's what came to mind), he briefly slips into the story-telling mannerisms of the grandfather in The Princess Bride, who is also played by Peter Falk.
    • Tim Drake's chat handle is "DreadPirateDrake".

Literature

  • The Dresden Files: In Ghost Story Harry mentions he fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the other two more well known ones being to never get into a land war in Asia, and to never go up against a Sicilian when death is on the line. Surprisingly, however, he misses a chance to comment on how he's Only Mostly Dead.
  • "Homecoming", a story in the Doctor Who Expanded Universe anthology Decalog 2, has a scene in which Mike Yates engages the villain in a sword fight, and the villain pulls the trick where he seems to be losing and then turns the tables by revealing that he's not really left-handed. Subsequently, Sarah Jane Smith comes to Mike's rescue with a cry of "I'm not left-handed either!".
  • Princesses of the Pizza Parlor: In Cookies and Campers: When the game setting is being explained, the "You killed my father" line is referenced:
    "Felitzfeleena", [Helen] said. "City of—"
"Kitty cats!" squeaked Claire. "I think he got that name from Spanish. Oh! I bet they all speak like Spanish kitties and say stuff like 'Hola, my name is SeƱor Eneko Gatista de Meowtonya y... y Ronroneos! You killed my father, prepare to die!'"
  • Prudence Penderhaus: In 19 Marigold Lane, Prudence and Cassius watch The Princess Bride on VHS together.
  • ''Foreign Affairs'', a Chakona Space / Goldfur's Stories About Ponies Crossover, has the following situation:
    • Twilight and Violet have just confirmed that a trans-galactic magic energy recharging beam has one end on Luna's moon. Princess Luna, who knows her moon like the side of her hoof calls this revelation "Inconceivable!" Tigerbright promptly quotes The Princess Bride to cast doubt on Luna's use of inconceivable. Luna is unimpressed with Tigerbright's explanation, so the chakat acquires a copy of the film from the starship's crew to share with the Equestrians.

Live-Action TV

Video Games

  • Dragon Age: Origins has multiple references to the movie:
    • Before the final battle, if you choose to leave Shale at the gate, she will say her goodbyes to you and then say, "Have fun storming the castle!"
    • When surrounded by Ser Cauthrien and her cadre of guards, the Grey Warden has the option to reply "Death First!" as Wesley does when challenged by Prince Humperdinck after crossing the Fire Swamp.
    • In order to acquire information on Sten's sword Asala, you can instruct Sten to "Tear his arms off", a la Inigo's instructions to Fezzik.
    • One of Sten's lines begins with "Get used to disappointment", as the Man in Black tells Inigo Montoya.
    • Sten's ends his conversations with the line "As you wish".
  • From Dragon Age: Inquisition: While traveling in Firewater Garden in the Emerald Graves, Vivienne can say "Someone should build a summer home here. The trees are actually quite lovely." This is a slight alteration of a comment ("Well, I'm not saying I'd like to build a summer home here, but the trees are actually quite lovely." Wesley says to Buttercup in the fire swamp.
  • In Infinite Craft, "The Princess Bride" is a possible crafting recipe.

Webcomics

  • Questionable Content: "Mawwage! Twue wuv!"
  • xkcd: The "1337" story arc concerns the exploits of an elite hacker named Elaine Roberts. At one point, another character encourages her to focus on file-sharing systems to circumvent the music industry, telling her: "You'd make a wonderful dread pirate, Roberts."
