- Kevin Smith, being a huge fan of the show, referenced Degrassi Junior High several times in his movies.
- Clerks: Caitlin Bree was named after Caitlin Ryan.
- Mallrats: Rene is seen wearing a Degrassi Junior High jacket. Becomes funnier when you learn that Smith originally wanted Stacie Mistysyn for the role before Universal turned her down for a more famous actress. According to Smith, Shannen Doherty (Rene) had no idea what Degrassi even was.
- Chasing Amy: This exchange:
Holden: So, uh, what do you wanna do tonight?Banky: I dunno. Get a pizza, watch Degrassi Junior High.Holden: You got a weird thing for Canadian melodrama.Banky: I got a weird thing for girls who say "aboot".
Live-Action TV
- Degrassi: The Next Generation, being a reboot, naturally does this by bringing back characters, referencing things from the show and even revisiting a plotline. But it doesn't do just that, it goes a step further and has a character watch an episode of it on TV as an easter egg.
- Tosh.0 had a segment around a creepy math teacher who was a tad too obsessed with Amanda Stepto. His YouTube song tribute videos have him chroma-keyed against pictures of Spike.
Music
- Canadian punk band Propaghandi covered the theme song under the name "Degrassi Junior High Dropout" with changed lyrics.
- Skankin' Pickle released a song called "I'm In Love With A Girl Named Spike". Frontman Mike Park had a massive crush on Amanda Stepto and currently hosts a Degrassi podcast with the same name as the song.
Real Life
- When reviewing Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Boston Globe critic Ty Burr compared it to being "Degrassi Junior High with dragons".
