Go To

With the remaining yellow students joining the Society of Light, Bastion wants to prove his worth.

  • An Aesop: Part of being a good friend is being there to support them when they're struggling.
  • Continuity Nod: Jaden and Syrus try to cheer up Bastion reminding him he won against Tanya. Bastion points out she defeated him.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: The Ojamas hope this will happen if Bastion defeats Chazz. They could have been right, as Sartorius was very keen on preventing his right-hand minion from losing.
  • Downer Beginning: The episode begins with Chazz defeating the last few yellow students and converting them to the Society of Light, except for Bastion, Syrus, and Hassleberry.
  • Downer Ending: And it ends with Bastion converting as well, however, a later episode implies he wasn't brainwashed.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Bastion is infuriated that despite being the best duelist in the Ra Yellow dorm, the Society of Light has completely ignored him and claims he isn't worth their time. Jaden, Syrus, and Hassleberry don't help him much either, basically just telling him to ignore the Society instead of helping him feel better. It is deconstructed in the end when Bastion throws the duel against Chazz despite being in the perfect position to win because Sartorius convinces him that joining the Society will let him finally be recognized for his achievements.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Bastion's motivation. The Society of Light not coming for him makes him wonder if he's a good duelist.
  • I Let You Win: Sartorius convinces Bastion to throw the duel so he can join the Society.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: This episode confirms Chazz can't see or hear his spirit partners anymore, similar to what happened to Jaden after Sartorius' failed attempt to brainwash him. So that effect on Jaden wasn't random but part of what happens to someone fully under the Light's control.
  • Morton's Fork: Bastion tries this, by placing two traps so that whether Chazz attacks with his Beetron Cannon or not will result in him losing the duel. Sartorius talks to him on the spiritual plane and convinces him not to activate them.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Jaden, Syrus, and Hassleberry realize this is partially their fault for ignoring Bastion and not caring when he came to them for support.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Jaden tries to assure Bastion he's a good duelist and doesn't need the Society of Light, neither he nor Syrus can name anyone he has beaten recently.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Inverted. Chazz tosses out the Ojamas from his deck.
  • Skewed Priorities: Right when Jaden, Syrus, and Hassleberry decide to take a break from fishing and try to find Bastion and cheer him up, Jaden finally catches a fish and they decide to cook it for a meal instead of helping their friend.
