Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 41 The Wrath Of Rebecca

Go To

Yugi and his friends prepare to leave Duelist Kingdom. Croquet gives him a hand-painted card of Cecelia called Ties of Friendship as proof of his championship title, along with the check for the prize money, which Yugi gives to Joey. As they leave, Seto Kaiba and Mokuba reunite, both brothers smiling happily for the first time in the present day. Yami Bakura promptly kills the mood when he gloats over his Millennium Eye.

Back at Domino, Yugi and his mother greet Solomon Muto, who's awake, if a little woozy. On the way home, they're accosted by an American girl named Rebecca, a prodigy duelist who is accusing Solomon of stealing her Blue-Eyes White Dragon. She demands it back, but Seto ripped it up in the first episode. Rebecca wants to duel him for it, but Yugi (not Yami Yugi) says he will instead. As the duel commences, Rebecca lets her monsters be destroyed for some reason, and Solomon notes that she plays exactly like an old friend of his named Arthur Hawkins. Rebecca reveals herself to be Arthur's granddaughter, and the duel's outcome seems uncertain...

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adapted Out: A minor case - but since this episode basically bleeds the last threads of Duelist Kingdom into the start of an unrelated Filler, the manga's "finale" pages of the arc get left out; Yugi's party carpooling in Kaiba's helicopter is only implied, and Mai doesn't appear at all.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: In a case where the winner enforces this instead of the loser, Kaiba tells Yugi that due to their respective "circumstances", with Kaiba being strong-armed by Pegasus to challenge Yugi and then Kaiba resorting to dirty tactics to win the duel, he declares their last duel was not really "conclusive", resolving they will settle things another day.
  • Bowdlerize: The scene of Yami Bakura licking the Millennium Eye and grinning sadistically is removed from the English dub - the scene freezes and slowly zooms in when he holds the Eye in front of him whilst he monologues to himself.
    • In the Japanese version, after Yugi destroys her Sangan, Rebecca looks on sadly before making the forearm jerk/"Up yours!" gesture whilst glaring at Yugi. The dub instead holds on the first frame of Rebecca of that scene, leaving her frozen in place and looking shocked whilst she whines about Sangan's destruction.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Rebecca. She's even worse in the Japanese version, where she swears like a sailor and makes frequent rude gestures.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: Yugi duels Rebecca without Yami's help.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Rebecca comes across as a whiny little kid before revealing herself as a skilled duelist.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Rebecca challenges Yugi to a duel for Solomon's Blue-Eyes White Dragon card because she believes he stole it from her grandpa Arthur long time ago.
