Recap / Yu Gi Oh Anime S 1 E 42 The Ties Of Friendship

Go To

Solomon tells the story of how he met Arthur Hawkins. It was at an archaeological dig in Egypt years ago. Arthur was reading some Egyptian hieroglyphics and notice they resemble Duel Monsters, making him believe that ancient Egyptians used these monsters in battle for power and control. One day, Solomon and Arthur were in a tomb when the roof caved in. There was only enough water for one person, so they decide to duel for it. Solomon surrendered, even though he could have won, because he knew Arthur would need the water more than him. The duel between Rebecca and Yugi is going in the exact same way as the duel he had.

Meanwhile, Rebecca's strategy is revealed: She let her monsters be destroyed to power up her Shadow Ghoul, who grows stronger with each monster in her graveyard. Yugi, however, realizes that she doesn't respect her monsters' sacrifices and treats them like tools. While he could win with Soul Release, Yugi surrenders the match. Rebecca is happy, but is shocked when Solomon Muto reveals the Blue-Eyes was torn up and believes he did it out of spite.

Arthur Hawkins arrives, tells her to behave and not only confirms Solomon's story about his old card, but also that Yugi could have won but chose to forfeit as a lesson in friendship and the heart of the cards. After all, there's more to life than winning. Rebecca apologizes, and as a show of friendship, Yugi gives her the Ties of Friendship card.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Cassandra Truth: Shocked to see the Blue-Eyes White Dragon torn in half, she accuses Yugi of being a Sore Loser, unaware that it was already damaged before she even arrived. She still doesn't believe that Yugi's grandpa obtained the card fairly until her grandpa arrives to set the record straight.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The sub version of this episode was the first mention of the Egyptian God Cards, which would become central to the Battle City arc.
  • Easily Forgiven: While Hawkins learns about how his old Blue-Eyes card was torn up, he forgives both Yugi and Solomon for the circumstances leading to it because they all kept it with sentimental value, rather than monetary.
  • Face Fault: Joey, Tristan and Tea all pull this when Yugi surrenders.
  • Heel Realization: After Hawkins' lecture, Rebecca realizes that she was wrong about Yugi. Fortunately, Defeat Means Friendship, and she's Easily Forgiven.
  • History Repeats: Yugi and Rebecca's duel works out the same way Arthur Hawkins' and Solomon Muto's duel did.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Yugi forfeits the duel. Rebecca's grandpa later reveals that Yugi had a card ready to wipe the floor with her, but chose not to.
