Trapped in a cave thanks to Bandit Keith, Yugi and his friend despair. It's Bakura who saves the day when his Millennium Ring begins to glow, pointing the way towards Pegasus's castle. They follow the trail and come out at a dueling arena manned by the Paradox Brothers, who speak in rhyme all the time.
Challenging Yugi and Joey to a tag-team duel, the Brothers also say that winning alone won't gain them passage to the castle; they must also choose the correct door of two. One leads to the castle, while the other leads to a maze that's impossible to escape. For the duel, all four players start with 2000 Life Points each, and will move in turn, alternating between teams. However, if one Duelist loses, his partner will also lose.
Dox starts by playing Labyrinth Wall, making the duel itself a maze similar to a tabletop game. Monsters can move on the spaces depending on their level, and traps can be set within the maze itself. However, their card Wall Shadow gets around these rules by moving on the maze walls. Joey is able to trap and destroy it, but the duel is far from over, and the Paradox Brothers further confuse things by saying one always tells the truth, while one tells only lies, and they may ask one question each. Joey asks both of them to show them the correct way out, but Yugi recognizes the liar's paradox and saves his question for later.
Meanwhile, as Mokuba thinks of Seto in the dungeons, Kaiba himself arrives to save him.
This episode contains examples of:
- Beast in the Maze: Wall Shadow, which is a Shadow Ghoul fused with the Labyrinth Wall and can attack from the walls themselves. That's just the first hazard that Yugi and Joey face in the labyrinth.
