Recap / Young Sheldon S 6 E 22 A Tornado A Ten Hour Flight And A Darn Fine Ring

Go To

"A Tornado, a 10-Hour Flight and a Darn Fine Ring" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired May 18, 2023.

Sheldon and Mary leave for Germany. On the flight, Sheldon spots a famous physics professor. Mary tells Sheldon not to go up and talk to him, but Sheldon does. The physics professor really enjoys talking to Sheldon. Meanwhile, Georgie buys a ring for Mandy, and then they visit Mandy's parents Jim & Audrey. Mandy and Audrey get into an argument about the wedding, and Mandy wants to leave, but it is raining very hard outside. Meanwhile, Pastor Jeff goes to the laundromat, and Connie & Dale act very weird about the "supply closet" (gambling room).

A tornado then strikes Medford. Connie & Dale hide everyone in the gambling room, reluctantly allowing Pastor Jeff to find out about it. George Sr. and Missy are driving home from the airport, and they get out of the car and lay down by the roadside. Georgie and the McAllisters hide in the bathroom (and continue to argue about the wedding). After the tornado passes, no one is injured, but Connie's house is destroyed.

Later, while everyone is going through the remains of Connie's house, George promises to let Connie, Mandy, and CeeCee stay at their house, while Pastor Jeff promises not to tell people about the gambling room.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big Storm Episode: The episode revolves around a tornado hitting Medford, which ultimately destroys Connie's house.
  • Continuity Nod: When Pastor Jeff wanders into the laundromat, Dale panics because he remembers what happened when the pastor disapproved of the video rental.
  • Downer Ending: Connie's house is destroyed after the tornado, and all the characters can do is look on in sadness.
  • Go Through Me: When George and Missy take cover from a nearby tornado, George ensures he is covering her the whole time.
  • Heel Realization: After several episodes of vindictive behavior toward her family, Missy breaks down, apologizing to her father and admitting she loves all of her family and she doesn't know why she has been acting out.
  • Hope Spot: At first, Mandy is overjoyed that her mother is fine with a small wedding. And then she realizes that her mother is ashamed at her having a child out of wedlock.
  • I Need A Drink: After witnessing Sheldon's usual behavior, the stewardess offers Mary a gin and tonic and she takes it.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Averted in that Pastor Jeff decides not to say anything about Connie's illegal gambling den after she shelters her laundromat customers inside.
  • Off Screen Moment Of Awesome: George Sr. keeps his cool and saves both his and Missy's lives during the tornado. We never see the truck being tossed into the air nor the tornado as it passes them.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • While surrounded by illegal slot machines, one would expect Pastor Jeff to throw a fit. But instead, he calmly sits with the gamblers and laundromat patrons, praying for their safety and for the safety of their loved ones. And after Connie's house is destroyed, Jeff promises not to tell anyone about her business and tries to help clean up.
    • After her house is destroyed, Connie has no snarky comments. She can only stare in shock at the wreckage of her home.
  • Out of Focus: While this episode shows Sheldon leaving for Germany, the plot is mainly focused on the other characters reacting to the storm.
  • Wham Shot: As Dale drives up to Connie's house, they see the path of destruction carved by the tornado. After six seasons of Connie's home being a refuge for the Cooper children and Mandy, it's a shock to see the building leveled.
