Go To

"An Ugly Car, an Affair and Some Kickass Football" is an episode of Young Sheldon that first aired November 3, 2022.

Georgie trades in his Mustang for a family car, as a surprise for Mandy (Emily Osment). She is surprised, but thanks Georgie. Later, at dinner, Mary asks Georgie and Mandy if they plan to find out the sex of the baby; Georgie says no but Mandy says yes, and so they start arguing again.

Later Mandy finds out about Connie and Georgie's secret gambling rooms. Connie and Georgie expect Mandy to be furious, but she is actually very happy, due to her own precarious financial situation. Mandy later thanks Georgie for everything that he has done for her.

Meanwhile, George Sr. gets a call from Principal Petersen (Rex Linn) about how Coach Wayne Wilkins (Doc Farrow) didn't show up for work. They find Wayne in a motel room, drinking vodka and root beer. Wayne says that his wife is having an affair with another man, and is already pregnant with his child. Petersen refuses to take him in, joking that his place is too small to take in every teacher with marital problems, so George takes Wayne to the Cooper home.

Petersen later tells George that Medford High School has an upcoming football game that they might lose, but Wayne is reluctant to coach the game. Petersen asks George to do it instead, and George ultimately does. Medford wins, and Petersen offers George the job back.

Tropes

  • Continuity Nod to "Four Hundred Cartons of Undeclared Cigarettes and a Niblingo": In that previous episode, Sheldon pondered what to call Mandy. In this episode, he uses the term "niblingo," and Missy explains that Sheldon came up with it.
  • No Sympathy: Sheldon has no concern about poor Wayne. He just wants to know if he can watch TV with him sleeping in the couch.
  • Out of Focus: Sheldon only has a few scenes in this episode and has no significant role in the two main plots.
  • Previously on…: We're reminded that George Sr. decided to quit as high school football coach rather than wait to be fired.
  • Shout-Out to Lt. Commander Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation: As they watch the episode "The Measure of a Man", Sheldon explains to Wayne that Data is an android who wants to be human. Not that Wayne cares one way or the other.
  • Skewed Priorities: Petersen is less concerned with Wayne's well-being than in getting him back in shape to coach the big Friday game.
  • You Are Fat:
Sheldon: I've heard that pregnant women eat for two.
Missy: I guess Dad's pregnant then.
