Recap / Young Justice S4 E3: Volatile

Go To

Conner and M'gann prepare for their wedding, while Beast Boy is faced with an inner demon.

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: B’arzz O’oomm, the former Green Beetle, returns in this episode as one of Conner's Martian "groomsmen" after being absent for all of Season 3.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • It's revealed that M'gann when she was younger attempted to shapeshift in order to appear as a Green Martian the same as lighter-skinned African-Americans trying to pass as white.
    • M'gann's anger at Em'ree trying to push her into taking her Martian form more often and rejecting her more "human" qualities reads like a queer person dealing with a relative trying to force them back into the closet or pressure them into acting less queer.
      • Similarly M'gann feeling right in her humanoid form (which she chose) as opposed to her White Martian form (which she was born with) comes off as a trans person.
  • Everyone Can See It: When M'gann asks S'yraa about her engagement to J'emm, S'yraa accuses M'gann of reading her mind to learn that. M'gann points out that she didn't have to; the tension between them is obvious from their body language. It may be less obvious to martians, as a telepathic species, to recognize body language as readily, but M'gann was trained as part of the Team.
  • Flashback: The episode opens with a flashback that shows the Outsiders op that led to the capture of Kobra shown in the selfie Gar was gazing at in the previous episode. It also definitively confirms that Stargirl, Windfall and Robin III have joined the Outsiders in the timeskip since Season 3.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Downplayed, but when M'aatt references how J'onn going to Earth helped widen his perspective on the racism on Mars, Conner self-deprecatingly notes that he's a bit surprised, as Earth isn't exactly known for racial tolerance.
  • It's All My Fault: Gar is revealed to be blaming himself for Brion's defection, seeing it as a loss in his new family of the Outsiders. M'gann (or rather Saturn Girl) tells him it wasn’t his fault, Brion made his choice.
  • Kids Are Cruel: Em'ree admits that she stood aside while M'comm and M'gann were bullied because she was terrified that the other Green Martians would turn on her.
  • Meaningful Echo: Unintentional but when called out on how Em'ree did nothing to protect M'gann and M'comm from the bullying they suffered for being White Martians, the older sister states she was only a child. The exact thing both of her younger siblings said to each other regarding M'gann abandoning M'comm for Earth.
  • Mind Rape: Gar suffered a subtle form of this when the group of Green Martians attacked the M'orzz house: according to Saturn Girl (disguised as M'gann), his mind was "bruised" from the psychic assault they committed and had been growing worse since. This is in part the reason for his Took a Level in Jerkass, as it exacerbated and fed on his unresolved issues from Brion's actions last year.
  • Old Dog: Bio-Ship is a sci-fi version, as she's been with M'gann for nearly ten years, but is reaching the end of her life cycle and has decided to spend her last days on Mars. She has created another bioship, nicknamed "Baby", to be M'gann's new ship.
  • The Reveal:
    • In a conversation between J'emm and B'arzz we learn that the Reach were apparently occupying Mars at the same time they did Earth. The call for help B'arzz sent to the Justice League and Team at the very end of season 2 led to them helping him liberate the planet from the Reach, which helped B'arzz redeem himself for his actions as Green Beetle.
    • J'emm's "ill-fated engagement" as mentioned last episode was to S'yraa S'mitt: but because she was a Green Martian, and thus a lesser class than he, they were forced apart by their cultural norms.
    • Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl and Chameleon Boy are on a covert mission to prevent their enemy from interfering in the events of the past, though the enemy's end goal has yet to be revealed.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Saturn Girl impersonates M'gann to heal Gar's mind. When the other Legionnaires question the prudence of this, as they are trying to avoid interacting with the past as much as possible, she first reasons that their recordings of history don't mention the incident one way or the other... but then sighs and simply states that Garfield was in pain, and she had to help.
Imra: Or else... why do we do this?
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The Legion came back to correct a specific big incident, and are trying not to interfere otherwise.
  • Stag Party: A variation. Martian marital tradition mandates that the groom, the father of the bride, and any of their close male relatives or friends go out to forge the marriage altar by telekinetically pulling lava out of a pit. Since Martians suffer from intense heat, there's a bit of Macho Masochism in it, with the implication that an "unworthy" groom wouldn't subject himself to it. The women of the family, on the other hand, assemble a canopy out of crystals, which requires great precision and concentration.
  • The Stinger: Superman is on the phone with Lois talking about Jon, and freaks out when he thinks Jon's powers may be manifesting at the same time as Lois's signal gets choppy.
  • Trauma Button: Working around lava triggers Garfield's memories of Brion, causing him to hallucinate that Brion is there and attacking them.
  • Trans Nature: Downplayed in that M'gann still considers herself Martian, but in a fight with her sister she admits that her humanoid Shapeshifter Default Form has always felt realer to her than her "true" Martian form. When she takes her White Martian form for a moment, her mother realizes that it feels just as psychically false as when she used to take the form of a Green Martian to avoid prejudice.
