Peter enlists Diana, temporarily bringing her back from her maternity leave, to impersonate Rachel’s alias “Rebecca,” who has received a new assignment from a client.

Tropes:

  • Babysitting Episode: In this episode, Mozzie's primary role is to babysit baby Theo, and surprisingly, he excels at it.
  • Blunt "Yes":
    • When Rachel asks Neal if he thinks he's smarter than Peter, he immediately answers “yes” (while also acknowledging that Peter believes he's the smarter one).
    • When Peter confronts Diana about having Neal steal the thumb drive from Dybek's home:
Peter: Neal broke into Dybek's residence, cracked his safe, and stole this, with no proof that the man is anything but the target of a heist, and you sanctioned it.
      Diana: Correct.
  • Bookends: In-universe, Peter personally packs up the evidence in his office instead of letting a probe do it, recalling how he also packed up all the evidence on his first case.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode concludes with Rachel escaping from prison. Mozzie leaves a voicemail for Neal, revealing that he has figured out that the symbols in the codex are numbers. Meanwhile, Rachel is in Neal's apartment, and she approaches Mozzie from behind.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Mozzie reads a book to Theo about the moon landing but tells him that it was faked.
  • Conversation Cut: Diana asks Jones what they know about the person who left a message on Rachel’s burner phone:
Diana: Now... what do we know about this guy?
[cut, to Peter speaking to Diana, Jones, and Neal]
Peter: Nothing. We've got a short voice mail and a phone.
  • Cooperation Gambit: Peter offers Rachel a more comfortable experience in prison in exchange for information about the secret signal she uses to confirm her identity to clients. Rachel agrees to talk only to Neal, and when Peter refuses, she offers to reveal the signal to him if she's allowed to talk to Neal after that.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Following his heartbreak courtesy of Rachel, Neal appreciates that Diana doesn't talk to him with pity:
Diana: Congrats on surviving the most epic break-up ever.
Neal: Oh, thank you for not asking how I am.
Diana: Two things we have in common — hating that question...
Neal: And being fine going it alone.
  • Drinking on Duty: After cleaning up his office, Peter gives himself and Neal a beer, jokingly breaking the rules:
    Neal: Beers at work?
Peter: Yeah. I know you're a stickler for rules, but if was ever there was a time to break one, it's now. Besides, we are officially off the clock.
  • Embarrassing Cover Up: While Neal is breaking into Dybek's safe, Dybek's mistress unexpectedly arrives. Neal pretends to be Dybek's wife’s lover to give himself an excuse for being there, and has to take off his clothes to play the part.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: While lying under Theo’s mobile, which has various numbers from different numbering systems, Mozzie realizes that the symbols in the codex are numbers as well.
  • Facial Recognition Software: Diana meets Rachel's client in public, and Jones uses facial recognition software to discover the client's identity, which gives them an answer in a matter of seconds.
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: The mistress distracts Dybek by kissing him so that Neal can sneak out unnoticed.
  • Hard-Work Montage: A fast-motion montage shows Peter and Neal packing up all the evidence while cleaning up Peter’s old office.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: When Peter calls out Diana for allowing Neal to steal the thumb drive, she reminds him that he has done similar things, which Peter concedes:
Diana: You've let Neal cross lines for years.
Peter: Diana, trust me. Do as I say.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Rachel tells Peter that she could have killed him but didn't, for Neal's sake, claiming that she still cares about him.
  • Immaturity Insult: When Peter teams up Neal with Diana, she playfully implies he is childish:
    Peter: Take Neal.
Diana: I have one child. Another won't be a problem.
  • The Insomniac: Mozzie admits that he can't sleep because the symbols in the codex keep him awake, as he wants to know their meaning.
  • Janitor Impersonation Infiltration: Mozzie pretends to be a gas technician claiming there is a gas leak in Diana’s house to sneak in and meet baby Theo.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...: When Peter asks Diana to help him impersonate "Rebecca" to find out what the client wants from her:
Diana: So let me get this straight. After we find out the client's identity, I have to impersonate Rebecca, who's really Rachel, hoping he doesn't know that she isn't a biracial woman who has to pump every three hours? […] Then I determine what the job is, pretend to carry it out, and deliver evidence of completion to our mystery man, which, given Rebecca's history, might include murder.
  • Lured into a Trap: Rachel sends a message to Worth, revealing she's in prison, thereby blowing Diana's cover while impersonating her. Luckily, Diana can disarm Worth when he points a gun at her.
  • Meaningful Look: Mozzie is thrilled about what to do with the diamond, but Neal looks hesitant, showing that he truly wants to leave his criminal past behind.
  • Metaphorically True: Neal assures Peter that he won't do anything illegal after being released from his tracking anklet, although Peter remains skeptical:
Neal: Peter, I've never lied to you.
Peter: Neal, you've double-talked, omitted, and bent the truth.
  • Mixed Metaphor: Peter tries to cheer up Neal, who is upset after talking to Rachel, and mixes up two sayings:
Peter: Well, they say throwing salt on the wound is the quickest way to heal.
Neal: I don't think they say that.
    Peter: You sure?
Neal: Yeah, they say something about time.
  • Not Good with Rejection: Rachel is convinced that Neal still loves her, and she looks visibly upset when he makes it clear that this is not the case anymore.
  • No Warrant? No Problem!: The FBI needs a warrant to get Dybek’s thumb drive with the evidence on his stock market manipulation, but they don’t have time, so Diana and Neal steal it from the safe in his apartment.
  • Positive Friend Influence: Elizabeth suggests that she and Peter have been a good influence on Neal, possibly contributing to his desire to change and leave his criminal past behind.
  • Professional Killer: Rachel reveals that she has worked as a professional assassin, describing a past assassination she carried out:
Rachel: An opera at the Teatro Teresa Carreno, tight security — I snuck in, removed a wire from the orchestra's piano, and slipped it... Over the lead actor's neck as the first act was ending. He owed a very large debt to the city's mayor and refused to pay, so I left his body onstage and left his head on the mayor's doorstep.
  • Shout-Out: When Peter jokes that he would normally send Neal undercover when they need someone to impersonate Rachel, Neal answers that this isn’t Some Like It Hot.
  • Sincerity Mode: Peter wants to know if Neal can and wants to leave his criminal past behind him, and Neal's earnest response shows that he means it, even though Peter still has doubts:
Peter: Do you think you can go straight?
Neal: [after hesitation] Yes. […] One word. No loopholes. Yes.
Peter: I want to believe it. But after all you've done, I'm not sure I can.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: Karen, the babysitter, angrily resigns on the spot because of Mozzie breaking into Diana’s house, leaving Diana to make Mozzie the new babysitter.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When Neal refers to Diana as his handler for the moment:
    Diana: You're not my C.I.
    Neal: You're handling me.
Diana: Ugh, that sounds all kinds of wrong.
  • This Is the Part Where...: Diana to Mozzie, when he breaks into her home just to meet baby Theo:
Diana: Okay, here's the part where I arrest you for home invasion.
  • Trust Password:
    • Rachel has a secret signal (a watch worn upside down on her wrist, set at a specific time) that she uses to authenticate herself to her clients, serving the same function as a password.
    • Conrad Worth wants to hear what "Rebecca" did in Caracas, May 2000, as another authentication method. Neal asks Rachel about it so that Peter can relay the answer to Diana over the earpiece she is wearing.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Conrad proposes that they bring “some muscle” along, Diana twists his arm and threatens to hurt him, showing that she can handle herself fine.
  • A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: While talking to Neal, Rachel initially pretends to be harmless and regretful, using the same voice she had as "Rebecca." However, Neal sees through her act and doesn't fall for it anymore.
  • "You!" Exclamation: When Diana sees Mozzie in her home, pretending to be a gas technician, the first thing she says is "You!"
