Go To

After his promotion, Peter takes on new responsibilities, and Neal gets a new handler in Agent Siegel, who is determined not to let Neal have any leeway. Their first assignment involves dismantling an online black market website, where one of the sellers happens to be Mozzie.

Tropes:

  • Birth-Death Juxtaposition: Mozzie fakes the death of his real-name-self, thereby also destroying the chance of his birth parents finding him. At the same time, Diana gives birth to her son that she names after Mozzie’s real name. Mozzie and Neal discuss at the end how poetic this is.
  • Black Market: The FBI has taken down a major black market website and starts to go after its sellers, one of which, Little Star, is Mozzie.
  • Death Trap Tango: Neal learns a dance timed to one of Mozart’s pieces so that he can avoid the moving security cameras at the Evidence Department.
  • Delivery Guy: Mozzie helps Diana give birth even though she was about to arrest him.
  • Destroy the Evidence: As per Hagen’s blackmailing, Neal breaks into the Evidence Department and destroys the bonds, granting Hagen a retrial.
  • Faking the Dead: Mozzie fakes his, or rather Teddy Winters’, death by planting his teeth in a body and blowing up the building it is lying in.
  • Given Name Reveal: Neal assumes that Teddy Winter, the name that Agent Siegel connects to Little Star, is one of Mozzie’s aliases. However, Mozzie reveals that it is actually his birth name that he kept alive in the hope that his birth parents would try find him one day.
  • Grave Robbing: Mozzie takes a body from the morgue and replaces their teeth with his so that he can fake Teddy Winters’, his real name’s, death.
  • Identification by Dental Records: Invoked. Mozzie replaces a body’s teeth with his own and sets the building of Little Star on fire so that the death of “Teddy Winters” would be confirmed via dental records.
  • Instant Birth: Just Add Labor!: Diana goes into labor while trying to arrest Mozzie. It does not take long until the baby is there.
  • It Has Only Just Begun: Mozzie is hopeful that Hagen will cease bothering Neal now that the bonds are destroyed. However, Neal himself is not as optimistic about the outcome:
Neal: I hope so, Moz. But I have a feeling it's just the beginning.
  • Let Off by the Detective: Diana confirms that Mozzie is Teddy Winters by tracking him to his underground lair, but covers it up after he delivers her baby.
  • Maternity Crisis: Diana goes into labor at a particularly bad time: while trying to arrest Mozzie in the basement where he is hiding out. Fortunately, Mozzie stays with her and helps her instead of fleeing.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: Mozzie helps Diana give birth even though he could have fled and potentially saved himself from prosecution. As a thanks, Diana not only keeps secret that Mozzie is Teddy Winter, but she also names her son after him: Theo.
  • Percussive Therapy: At one point, Diana angrily smashes the buttons of her keyboard, being on the edge due to lack of sleep.
  • Perplexing Plurals: Neal and Mozzie briefly discuss the plural of “mongoose:”
Mozzie: Maybe a new handler will remind us why snakes don't fraternize with mongeese.
    Neal: Mongeese?
    Mozzie: Mongooses?
  • Present Company Excluded: Jones’s reaction, when Diane names her son “Theo”:
Jones: Wait, wait, you named him after a criminal? I mean, no offense to present company.
  • Screaming Birth: Diana screams quite a lot while she is in labor.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Diana stays up several days without sleeping and constantly works instead. Jones reckons that she does it because she is worried that she won’t be allowed to do her job the way she did before after having a child.
  • Street Performer: Mozzie disguises himself as a Statue of Liberty street performer when he secretly meets up with Neal.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Peter has this reaction when Siegel describes the fleeing suspect as “short, balding, bespectacled,” which matches Mozzie’s description.
