Recap / White Collar S01 E02 "Threads"

Go To

Holy shit, it's Fashion Week! Neal and Peter have to struggle with all the... okay, Peter has to struggle with the presence of all the models in town stealing all the cabs. Neal just enjoys the smorgasbord of flesh.

Oh, and there's a counterfeiter in town smuggling stuff using models who he's willing to kill.

Tropes:

  • Ambiguously Brown: Carlo Rota has no trouble posing as an Israeli counterfeiter/murderer.
  • Betrayal Insurance: Neal told Kate that his assets are in San Diego while telling Mozzie that they are in Portland (they are in neither place) so that he would know who betrayed him if one of them did.
  • Blunt "No": When Neal gets an idea how to rile up Dmitri and is about to tell Peter:
    Neal: You trust me?
    Peter: Nope.
  • Chalk Outline: The room that Peter proposes to use for the staged party is a loft seized by the DEA and has a chalk outline of a person on the floor.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Neal needs Peter to look like a thug, so he asks him to "stand there and look menacing". Peter puts his hands on his hips and looks disappointed, "like a dad whose kid just struck out".
  • Conveniently Timed Attack from Behind: Cruz tackles Ghovat from behind before he can shoot Neal.
  • Gilligan Cut: "Oh, you think your friend's place is better than mine?" Cut from picture of murder scene loft to penthouse rooftop garden in uptown. "Yeah, okay, it's better."
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: Ghovat has kidnapped Tara and strapped a bomb to her, and would let her live in exchange for the dress with the data.
  • Meaningful Name: The Villain of the Week is code-named Gavotte. That's the name of a French dance from the 17th century. It's also quite close to "garrote", murder by strangulation.
  • Oh, Crap!: Peter assures them he's got the venue covered. Neal and El share a look. They're right. It's a murder scene. Chalk Outline included.
  • Percussive Pickpocket: Neal deliberately bumps into Dmitri at the party, swiping his phone in the process without him noticing.
  • Public Secret Message: Kate sent a secret message to Neal in Morse code during their last meeting, knowing that only he would decipher it when watching back the security footage, which he does. He notices that she tapped her fingers to spell out “BOTTLE.”
  • Recognizable by Sound: Tara, having witnessed Ghovat kill someone, says she would recognize his voice again if she heard it.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Neal throws a pair of sunglasses on Peter to help him look menacing then asks him to say "I'll be back."
      Peter: No.
    • Mozzie says that Kate's fold-in letter code could be cracked by anyone who's ever seen an issue of MAD Magazine.
    • While watching the security footage of Neal's last meeting with Kate, Neal calls Mozzie "Rain Man" when he states that the letter M is the thirteenth of the alphabet, and that 13 is a prime number.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Neal laments that he'll have a hard time getting access to the security footage of his last meeting with Kate, Mozzie proposes that Neal could just ask Peter if he would give it to him.
  • Strapped to a Bomb: When Ghovat meets with Peter in a public place, he brings along Tara who has a bomb strapped to her that will go off if Peter does not comply with his demands.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Diana is replaced by Agent Cruz, a new incredibly hot FBI agent. Except she's straight?
  • Tuck and Cover: Peter shields Tara with his body after he takes off the explosive belt and throws it away.
