Recap / Whats New Scooby Doo S 3 E 10 Block Long Hong Kong Terror

Go To

When Shaggy's favorite bath toy, Duck Guy, gets damaged, the gang travels to Hong Kong to track down the factory that made the rubber duck. However, while there, a dragon crashes a parade, planting the group in the middle of a gigantic mystery including a factory owner, his toymaking assistant, an acrobatic troupe, and a clumsy detective.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Monster of the Week is a gigantic Chinese dragon.
  • Butt-Monkey: Detective Kang, a local who shows up partway through the episode, is trying to hunt down the dragon to redeem his reputation. Apparently, he's infamous for things like getting locked in his own handcuffs and hopes that everyone will forget it after he becomes "the Dragon Hunter of Hong Kong."
  • Crisis Catch And Carry: When the dragon bursts through a warehouse wall while they're investigating, Fred slings Daphne over one shoulder and Velma under the opposite arm and runs for it.
  • Damsel in Distress: Mei Ling ends up Bound and Gagged inside the dragon mecha after continually interfering in the real culprits' efforts to attack Shaggy for witnessing the original theft.
  • Humongous Mecha: Fred's plan to deal with the dragon involves somehow building Duck Guy into a huge robot. After the dragon ends up downed by a bunch of fireworks, it turns out it was also a mecha.
  • Rescue Romance: Downplayed; Shaggy and Mei Ling were already drawn to each other, but Mei constantly showing up to save him during perilous moments doesn't hurt.
  • Revealing Cover Up: The acrobatic troupe piloting the dragon mecha successfully steal the ring they were after, but they're afraid that Shaggy saw too much, so they keep going after him. Shaggy never mentions seeing them steal the ring, and he thought the dragon was trying to chomp him and missed. Had they just retired the dragon after the initial theft, rather than continually going after the gang, they might have escaped.
  • Ship Tease: Shaggy and Mei Ling bond over owning similar rubber ducks. When the dragon keeps coming after Shaggy, Mei Ling continually interferes, to the degree that the real culprits hold her captive to stop her from doing it, and Shaggy in turn sticks up for her when the others suggest she might be piloting the dragon. At the end, Mei asks Shaggy to keep Duck Girl, saying that she knows they'll see one another again.
  • The Voiceless: Wu and the other acrobats are the only culprits in WNSD to not have voice actors or speak any lines of dialogue, outside of laughing at Fred's bad Ju-Jitsu.
