Recap / What We Do In The Shadows S2 E1 "Resurrection"

Go To

Vampire assassins regularly attack the manor after the Nightwalkers escape execution, meanwhile the new familiar is making quick friends with his masters.

Tropes

  • Accent On The Wrong Syllable: Nandor refers to Topher's body as the "Carc-cass".
  • An Arm and a Leg: Topher's arm comes right off when Guillermo gives in to his request for a high five. This is followed by Topher picking up the severed arm with his other arm and attempting to use it as a weapon against Guillermo.
  • Brick Joke: Topher endears himself to Colin Robinson by explaining to him how the cider coupons work (which Colin Robinson can repeat to others a new way to feed off of people). Colin Robinson recites it at Topher's funeral.
    • Colin Robinson is put out that there isn't a novelty license plate with name on it... but there's inexplicably one with "Condom". Wallace the Necromancer insists it's very popular. Later a zombie sweatshop worker intones "Condom". It's either a very Unfortunate Name or just all the guy can say (and print on a plate).
  • Call-Back:
    • The Running Gag of Laszlo and Nadja's familiars dying is addressed in the beginning, Topher being the most recent person to take the position.
    • Though Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja escaped from their execution in "The Trial", that doesn't mean that they could just get away with it. Now vampire assassins are routinely sent to kill them, only for Guillermo to intervene and kill them before everyone else in the house notices.
  • Came Back Wrong: The resurrection turned Topher into an unruly zombie.
  • The Cameo: Haley Joel Osment as Topher and Benedict Wong as Wallace the Necromancer.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Vampire assassins have been coming for two weeks straight, and Guillermo is the only one that noticed. Even when Topher lets two of them in, he doesn't seem to think anything of it.
    • Guillermo is the only one who recognizes that Topher's resurrection went wrong. It takes Nandor repeatedly trying and failing to kill him for it to finally sink in.
  • Knew It All Along: Laszlo repeatedly calls Wallace a con-artist, saying that the failed ressurrection spell was a purposeful botch-job. By the end of the episode, it is revealed that he keeps various zombies in his attic who make his merchandise for him.
  • No-Respect Guy: Guillermo gets chastised by Nandor, unaware of the vampire assassins that he's been killing to keep them safe.
  • Pokémon Speak: It seems like zombies are mostly reduced to just repeating their own name over and over, although over time Topher gets goaded into also bringing back many of his Catchphrases from earlier in the episode (including the name of his business, Doze Apples). It turns out that Wallace the Necromancer makes use of this, putting the zombies to work endlessly crafting souvenir keychains of their own names.
  • Scatting: Wallace does this in his ritual, something that doesn't go unnoticed by Nandor.
  • Social Media Before Reason: The Necromancer takes a text while performing the resurrection, likely why Topher Came Back Wrong.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Guillermo and Topher respectively. While Guillermo is dedicated, practical, and works his ass off to be sired (and is given nothing to show for it), Topher is hip, magnetic, and only puts on the illusion that he gets anything done. Naturally, Guillermo hates him.
  • Vanity License Plate: Miniature ones serve as one type of the souvenirs at the necromancer's hut.
